I was wondering, the AK74 I grab may not be chrome lined, now the main reason I want this gun is for surpluss ammo. Now consideing I live in a state with humidity always under 8% and in the summer as low as 2-3% should I really fret over a chromed barrel? I would also clean it right after shooting. Soo, the 64,000 dollar question. Should I care at all if it's a chromed barrel or not? Would the clening process change if it's chrome or not? I always use Hoppe's 9 for my Mosin

Hard chrome in most any non-accuracy type rifle is a smart addition.
Hard chrome lined bores are more resistant to corrosion caused by corrosive ammo or inattention to proper maintenance.

In addition, hard chromed bores are easier  and faster to clean, and last a lot longer than a bare steel bore.
A chrome lined chamber makes for more reliable feed and especially extraction.

The only down sides to chrome lined barrels is the slightly higher cost and slightly lower accuracy in Match type rifles.
Considering the advantages, it's sort of a no-brainier to get chrome.

Chrome also helps pevent pemature barrel wear. For the pressures and muzzel velocitys reached in a 5.45x39 barrel, I would say go chrome for sure. Chrome is supposed to cut down on friction between the bullet and the barrel, this really helps during prolonged rapid fire.

Ok, question what's the average chrome barrel life span? I know Aresnal say's 10,000 is there anyone on this board that has over 5,000 and confirm it's still smooth sailing?

The h&K 416 has been tested with over 30,000 rounds through a chrome barrel and still going strong
