Chines Type 56S-1's were $300.00 all day long.
Yeah, I remember. Hungarian SA-85M's were $450.00 for a fixed stock and $500.00 for a folder and people bitched. |
How 'bout mags at $4.99 a piece / or, you couldn't give them away.
NIB Norinco SKS, $89 all day long, sometimes $59 Romanian SAR-1's (not too long ago), $239.00 NIB and on and on and on. |
an AK with folding stock and bayonet lug cost $1200+
(I do not go back as far as some of you guys) |
I hate you old guys, reminding me of life before 922, '86, and the Chinese Ban...
(and how I never got to experience the $60 SKS) |
i i get some time, i'll bring home some old Shotgun News and scan some of the old ads and really make your heart sink.
The good news is that there are some bargains. $1 G3 mags, $12 AK flats, $99 Romy kits (it's not too late to get these), $349 used glocks (ok, not AK, but relitavely a good deal). Caspian |

Damn we're old ... On the bright side, now we have rail mounts, Aimpoints and ARSENALS ... |

Back in 1988 a boss of mine, who happened to have an FFl asked me if I wanted an AK. I said to him "what do you have". At the time I worked at the Big K. We walked out to his car and he opened his trunk and said which one do you want. He had just purchased a dozen Norinco .223 underfolders and he got a great deal on the lot. I took one home that day for $150. I think he sold the rest for about $200 each.
I should have bought all of them for that price. I traded it in 1992 for a Sig pistol. Kicking my self in the ass for that one. |
75 round drums $20.00 100 round drums $25.00. Wish I had bought more.
Don't remind me man. Who else here first fell for the AK-74 or the AKS-74U "Krink" from reading David Isby's article in Soldier of Fortune, circa 1984? |

Full auto Chinese AK for $3,500.00, M79 for $2,500, M203 for $2,000.00, MP44 for $1,200.00, MP40 for $2,500...... Could have bought all of that if I only had the $$$ Russian SVD for $999....D'Oh!!!

Non-AK, but I remember putting on layaway an Ingram.45, at the local shop, brand new, but pre-owned, 2 4-packs of mags, and sling for $300.00, open bolt by the way. At the time I thought to myself, man expensive but will be fun. A week or so later I decided to walk away with a used S$W revolver 'cause I needed a snubby at the time for the new job.
The Ingram was gone by the end of the week, and I though to myself, eh, oh well, there will be more of them. Now, |

Yep, those Good Old Days...As I was on the way out of the Dallas Gun Show; with 2 MAK-90s in my arms...I passed a table with about 20 Chinese Makarov @ $99.00/ea, right beside those...were the Tokarev(with the ugly safety lever) @ $75.00/ea...

Yeah, I bought my first AK back in '82. It was a fixed stock, stamped receiver chinese model with underfolding bayonet. (I don't remember the manufacturer). I paid $235.00 for it. At that time, I thought it was pricey. I was into handguns and ARs during that period.
I later sold it for $400.00. What a dope! I just wasn't into AKs back then. Man, how I wish I had that beast back. Bud |

When Tapco was remotely affordable -- LINKY
Also, FYI, 80's money is a totally different animal than 2006 money (I know, what a concept). Check out this link and see how unaffordable your old AK was then too . I hate it when people start with "...back in my day, gas was a quarter a gallon", I usually finish with "...and you made $5.00/hour". Oh well, rant off. ETA: ~6/2004 - HK/CETME TACTICAL MOUNT Our Price: $24.99 1/2006 - $39.99 ~6/2004 - AR-15 CARRY HANDLE MOUNT Our Price: $29.99 1/2006 - $69.99 Can anyone say gouged? |

1000 rounds of copper washed steel core delivered to your door for $65 dollars
I bought my mak for 229.00 and my drum for 29.99. Underfolder, 15.00........And all those SKSs by the crate at the gunshow...........69.00 or 3 for 59.00 each........ Man those were the good ole days eh? I think I bought 4 mags in a pouch brand new for 12.00. Thats back when gunshows were gun shows. not Knife, nazi memoribilia, airsoft. cane, and cheap collectables shows.

You guys are gonna make me cry! I wasn't around for all these things...
If you look around enough you can find an LMT M203 for about $1500. |
Well, I've only been into AKs for about a year. Back then new bulgy folder kits were $289 and jnewts labor was $250.
Glad I got what I did, but I really wish I had sprung for a krink as well. :( Supply and demand. If theres a ton of something its cheap and people think it'll be that way forever..a little later and its in threads like this with a higher price. I've been looking at makarovs lately and a nice bulgarian is around $200. After I passed some up for $130 that seems pretty high, until next year when they're $250 or more. |
My dad remembers gas at 20 cents a gallon, I put 80 bucks worth in my F350 this mourning
In the 80's I was offered a Valmet 72? ( 5.56 ) from my cousin who needed money. $150 . I looked at it ans said what the HELL is a Valmet ?? Naw I don't want it. Dern Foriegn made gun !!!!!!!!!!! .. The tears shead over that one. My uncle bought it instead to run wild dogs off his property... I'd be Damned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WarDawg

I remember going out cruisin' with my buddies, putting $2.00 worth of gas in the tank and riding around for hours on that in my 70 Camaro. I remember being disgusted about an HK 94 (with an UGLY long barrel) being like $600-ish!!! No way man!!! FN-FAL's about the same...........hardly!!! So I bought an original AR-180 for $299 because it looked better than a Colt AR15 for less money! Original Sharps Buffalo rifles I turned down because they were a tad over $1000 ~ $1500. Now worth about $10000. Jeez.........this is a depressing thread!!!!!
A friend of mine that was in the gun business from the 70-early 90s bought, HK-p7 $350, FN-FAL $450, USAS-12 $free!!!!!!!!! , colt SP1 with a real M203 $600, HK-SP89 $250, HK-94 $350, the list goes on...... I almost cried about the level IV SAS vest for $200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

holy s@#$ when was this? |

MP44 was in the early 80s The rest were in 1994 and the SVD was I think in 1997, that's what my brother-in-law told me he paid for his. |

One large circle of tables at an early 80's gun show with an Oklahoma outfit selling FA NRA weapons. S&W 76 $900.00 Next to it a full stock MP5 $1500.00. FA Steyr Uzi type, FA Rugers and more! God help me I had $500.00 maybe in the bank but $2000.00 on a creditcard. OH WHY OH WHY did I get practical. Im just sick everytime I think I could have walked out the door with any
I remember selling pre-ban Norinco under folders for $375.99 at the shop..and laughing at the guys buying them because i thought they were a POS, and you could have bought a COLT AR for $425.00.
Oh well... Live and learn...:) KyARGuy |
Guilty!...I also tracked down a copy of Jane's from the publisher about the same time, they did a "test" on it with on 33 rounds, as that is all they could get! I also remember in the mid 80's if you bought a 1440 round case of Chicom ammo...they GAVE you an SKS! I also remember turning down a NIB hk94 for $450!...(young married guy didn't have the money!) |

I still have that magazine with that article. I still get a kick out of the fact that there was no PG on it. |

Remember when the Bush 1 ban hit? There was a hardware store in Milwuakee, where we lived at the time, there were selling Chinese UF w/1440rnd case of ammo $325 OTD. I shoulld have bought them all.
I bought a Daewoo K1A1 for $300 in 1991 and I still have a unfired Sks I gave $65 for new. I still have the Daewoo by the way I wonder what is on the market now that we will look back at 10 years from now and regret not buying?
Yeah, I wish I was able to get all that cool stuff you passed up then. But just wait, 20 years from now, we will be saying the same thing about the stuff we buy today. Ohh, I remember back in 2006 when you could buy a Krinkov kit for $500...and remember when you could still buy a WASR 10 for $300? Oh those were the days. The fact of the matter is, it only gets worse from here on out boys, buy it now while you still have the option of buying, because 20 years from now, the way the ATF is passing new laws, more than half the stuff you can buy today will be illegal to buy tomarrow.

The "Good Old Days" Are right now. Look at the EE. All manner of AK's for $300-500
Vector Underfolders for $570 SKS's are $129.00 In adjusted dollars, that is as good as anything in the '80's We have everything right now....................except the affordable F/A option. |
