I need to remove the rear site on an AK and wanted to ask if there was a "proper" way to do it?

I'm thinking just lift the rear site to the straight up position, then shove a flathead screw driver in from the rear to compress the leaf spring, then push down the rear site and twist it out, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't a better/easier way before I tried it.

put a piece of cloth over the rear 2/3

put a flat head screwdriver in the groove, hit with hammer, down and back...

site will go flying

reinstall in reverse with hammer

That thing sure is pesky.

I ended up using my front sight tool and a wooden shim to compress the spring.
You might find that you can just force it back in by hand.
If not, don't peen your sight. Use a rubber mallet.

You can always buy the CampyBob rear sight removal tool from Red Star Arms www.redstararms.com/856.htm

I'm sure I'll only need to remove it this one time, but I'm always tempted to buy from them just becasue they always have hot chicks on their web site with AK's.   Sex sells man.

Best/safest method (for you and the rifle):

Put the rifle on a drill press table.
UNPLUG THE PRESS.

Either clamp it or have a buddy hold it steady.

Put either a 1/8" punch or a screwdriver bit in the chuck.

Run the quill down so the bit or punch passes between front of the actual sight leaf and the sight base.

Make sure the bit or punch is on the rear sight spring, then press down with the drill press quill to take the tension off the spring,

Slide the sight out to the rear.

Using this method you don't slip and gouge the rifle, OR YOU, and unlike rougher methods, you don't damage the sight or the rifle.

Thanks for the pic.  Makes it much easier to make sense of the process.
