Hey guys, I have something to ask of you. I am going to send a care package to a new friend and customer of mine, Capt Highberger, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. His unit is currently deployed in Iraq and I am am sure they could use some goodies from back home. I have got the okay from Capt Highberger to send his men a care package. He said his Marines like snacks, chewing gum, magazines, toiletries, etc and would be most appreciative of anything they receive. DVD's. basically anything you would like to have if you were in their shoes. Capt Highberger is the CO of Weapons Company and has 183 Officers and Marines under his command. I would like to get enough goodies together so that each and every one of those soldiers gets a small baggie of items.

Anyone that wants to donate some items for BLT 2/1, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit please let me know. You can ship the items to me and I will box everything up for shipment. I would like to send a package every two weeks until they come home.

I am going to send the first of several care packages 2 weeks from today, which will be Aug 22nd. Any donations for the first package need to be here by Aug 19th.

Also, if you dont mind, post here in the thread what you are sending so I can keep track of everything and who it comes from. Does not matter how big or small, if you have extra $.50, buy a pack of gum and send it. Every little bit will add up.

This is very important guys, these men are heros in every since of the word. They are there for us, defending our freedoms and way of life. Please dont just read the post and blow it off. Many a person enjoy the freedoms we have, not many volunteer to defend them.

Is there a std drink flavor already provided by the mil over there? Desert summer means lots of water drinking, but I'd hate to send more of 'that same flavor' powdered mix.

Gotta be some paperback books to pass around for off-duty time, that members already have on their shelves.

Josh, I'm in. We'll start with a bunch of gum. Would they be interested in books. I have a lot of paperbacks. All in good shape. Mystries,adventure etc. Let me know.

Sounds great guys! Anything you would like if you were there is what we need to gather up. Books, shampoo, toothpaste, snacks, you name it. I was also informed that nothing is restriced for them so mags like Stuff and Maxim would prob be MUCH appreciated...lol...

Miss RSA posters? You know they would love those.

Lots of individual use soaps and shampoos

Got some good news! My neighbor and good friend which happens to be the president of the local exchange club and business owner is also going to work things from his end. We are going to try and have the local paper run a add about the drive. Hopefully we will get a good amount of donated items to send over. If anyone wants to run a drive at their church, school, ect, feel free. Contact me and I will give you the details and the units shipping addy.

200 packs of gum on the way. It should be there by Friday.

Also if you can email the Capt. see what the guys might like for reading material. I have a lot of paperbacks, mystry, adventure, histroy, novels, some hunting and fishing books. Etc.

Back in August one of wounded Marines was interviewed by his local paper in a small town in Georgia. He told them to send us care packages with hygiene gear, food, or just plane ol white socks (which our Gunny didn't like).

We started getting so many packages from this small town we'd hand out stuff to other Platoons, then it was Companys, and pretty soon Iraqis. We had so many socks we'd wear one pair a day and then throw it away.

What always seems to be what Marines want (or atleast while I was there)

Basic Hygiend Gear including,
Soap/Body Wash/Shampoo, full size bars or bottles
Shaving cream/Razors (some guys like the disposable ones, but most use Mach3s)

Magazines of most any type (not rifle mags)
Movies, but we rarely got those (Marines will watch anything, I recall sitting through every episode of Friends and Smallville)
550 Cord would probably get used up
Usually paperbacks will end up sitting around, not too many Marines cared to bother w/ them
Snacks
And of course if you send Marines porn, they will love you (we recieved a box from a church once w/ a few xxx DVDs)

Hope that helps a bit in your decision making

OH HELL YES - GREAT IDEA JOSH!!!! wow that's awesome. I've been reading lotsa books bout the intiial days of the campaign and all teh sand and sandstorms and I'm wondering if some 'wet-ones' and some of that evaporating hand wash wouldn't be in order?

Yep, I was sending wipes back then, and my contact said ANY scent or brand was fine as long as they had a handy tool to get some of that damn sand out of their nose/ears.

While I would not send them in summer, cookies were a huge hit.

I orderd 72 cases of those Old Spice Cool Wipes. They are in individual packets so that should work good for em. =)

Looking good so far. I am guessing 4-5 good sized boxes going over.

Do you think they would enjoy small cans of fruit? That was what I wanted most when I was in VN. I could never get enough of it. I will send you some if you think it is a good idea?

How about setting up a PayPal account for this, so we can shoot you some $, either to purchase
items with, or to defray your shipping costs? That shouldn't have to come out of *your* pocket.
If that's too much of a pain, say so, and I'll just snail-mail something, but PayPal would be
good up to the "last minute"....

Josh and guys, whould we get a list of DVD's going that we have bought? While a few duplicates getting sent would be fine, it would suck if we all picked up the same $5 DVDs from wally world. Dumb idea or is it workable?

A buddy of mines sister has something to do with candy and retail I was at his house yesterday there are litterally cases of Skittles and other stuff we could get over there if someone would mind helping out a little on shipping. I will chip in, so will he but these things are heavy. Let me know by the way he is 610 here on ARFCOM.

Got it my man.

So far we have a ton of gum, 72 cases of cool wipes and a big box a canned fruit. I will snap a pic Monday eve.

I took one package of these:

one travel size of these:

and put those three items in 3 zip lock quart size freezer bags, one inside the other inside the other to keep the sand out!

24 of those will be by you Monday.
