762 has significantly more recoil than 545.
Neither is a bruiser, I'm talking about gun movement that affects followup shots. |

7.62x39 = .30-30 Win
5.45x39 = .223 Rem That might help put it into perspective. I've owned both 7.62 and 5.45 AK's. Currently have a SLR-105a1R that is awesome. I had a WASR-10 before that which was good to me but the finish and wood didn't cut it. 7.62 definitely hits harder. I'd say go that way first if you want to get into AK's. You'll end up with a 5.45 and a 5.56 AK before too long....

what about noise? are 7.62's noticablly louder than 5.45's?

The DBA level has a lot to do with the flash suppressor/compensator.

I found that 7.62x39 is slightly louder with wolf ammo......... (only type I tried around same time/same range day) Not sure if that is the exception or rule..........and they weren't special hot rounds or anything. And both were from AK-74 style brakes, on AK-103(7.62x39)/AKS-74(5.45x39). 7.62x39 kicked harder(of course), and from by-stander(2ft)...seemed to be a bit louder. Bout all I know.........

So i guess you could compare a 5.45 to a 5.56? i've shot a few ar's so i know how thats like... barely any kick at all.
But eh... is it harder to bump with a 7.62? Anyone have any links to some vids that'll show both types in the same conditions? |

5.45 ak-74 sized has even less kick than 5.56 sar3 type..... 5.45 is soo easy to control....even on full auto. Bumping is funner with 7.62x39, but easier with 5.45/5.56.............. gotta go do it!

I can bump the hell out of a 7.62 AK!
 I've never fired any other caliber AK, but I would guess that they are about the same as anything else for bumpfiring. Get a 7.62, magazines are alot more plentiful.

like most on here, I've had both.
They are both LOUD! But the 5.45 I've have, has the 74 brake permanently pinned, so there's no way I could take it off to test against my 7.62 which has no compensator. Again both are loud, and I doubt you'd notice the difference (if there is any). The 5.45 has substantially less recoil, but the 7.62x39 isn't that bad (I shoot a lot of milsurp rifles)

Like most of us, you'll end up owning both. My advice.......and this goes counter to what I normally tell people...... Find an Arsenal Inc. SLR-105A1 or A1R and buy it now. They are soon to be discontinued and they are the real-deal AK-74 in semi auto. Usually I recommend the 7.62x39mm first, but there will be more of those around for a while.

Get the SLR-105 right now, only true option for a 5.45mm AK.
There will always be 7.62x39 AK's around. Alot more options and choices to be made when choosing a 7.62x39 AK too. |

I agree... If you have an AR, get some Wolf 55gr .223 ammo and fire some at the range. That's what Wolf 5.45 feels like. Actually the 5.45 probably has a little less recoil and the muzzle brake probably has alot to do with it. An AK74 with the original style muzzle brake is much more controlable than an AR-15 in rapid fire. The muzzle doesn't move at all. The only thing you feel is the rearward recoil going straight back as the muzzle stays perfectly still. |

I remember seeing a steel plate test awhile back which showed the 5.45 actually doing more damage to the plate than the 7.62. They are right though, you can't have just one AK so plan on one of each unless you like not being able to sleep at night. |

Last I knew 5.45x39 was not manufactured in the U.S. so you had to rely on imported ammunition. If this is still true I would stay with 7.62x39.

Most of us rely on imported 7.62x39 as well. If you think you like the look of the AK-74, get the SLR-105. You won't regret it. Also, they are a blast to bumpfire. I'm not talking kiddy bumping from the hip. I'm saying accurate simulated full auto fire from the shoulder. They have the best AK triggers out there (Arsenal AK's in general) and are the prefect weight to bump an entire mag off from the shoulder and still hit the target.

That's not a bad price, it's going to be a post ban and you'll spend a little over $100.00 to "un ban" it with a new front sight assembly and muzzle brake.
