I'm looking for a 5.56 AK with a 16inch barrel. I'd like one with easy magazine availability - it'd be nice for the AK to use standard AR/M4 mags but I'll make do. What mfg should I look for?

Upon request of author, I have locked the duplicate thread, and put a link to this one in. I will put a link to the other thread here if anybody would like to reference it.

I would like to have merged it, but our software doesn't allow it without a lot of really tedious editing, and in the end makes the conversations from the different threads difficult to follow.

Arsenal's SLR-106 series can be had for pretty darn cheap right now, and the new production models are very reliable.  The CR models are going for $700-850, the FR models are going for $700-850, and the UR models can be had for $800-1000.  There are AR mag adapters that will work, although I'd personally just bite the bullet and get a few Circle 10's.

From the question i'd say; a converted Saiga, converted to take AR mags as well.

Arsenal SLR-106 or Romanian SAR-3.

I hope that an importer can bring in the Polish AR mag adaptor!

SLR 106 with circle 10 mags is hard to beat.  If you have more coin this is a nice option as well and takes AR mags:

Texas AK designs has the BASTARD if you'd like to build your own AR Magged gun.

I started that other thread an i think i'll be waiting on an archer. While i'd like to have an AK that can take AR mags i do also think at some point if you AR an AK too much you no longer have an AK if that makes any sense.

No way and deffinatly not for a 5.56 varient ((10)) mags are $40-45 vs a pmag for $10-12. Even if circle 10's are so durable and awesome it's not worth 4 times more than a pmag.

I keep hearing the Arsenal's are hit or miss sometimes in the 106 series. I don't want to spend $1000 on a AK. I had a Norinco 84s but sold it. I regret that now.

i disagree. how much does the conversion cost? $300? $400? that's quite a few cirlce 10's, weigers, or galil mags..

I came to this conclusion a few months ago when I came up on the definitive waitlist.  $40 for the circle 10 mags is high but you only need 5 or 10. They’ll last forever.  As another post indicates the 106 rifles are running $100 to $300 less than comparable 104 and 107 rifles on gunbroker.  Take the savings and apply it to the difference in mag cost and be done with it.  I have 9000 rounds through a 106 and the majority of that is through 3 circle 10 mags.  SAR3’s are great as well but the circle 10 will need to be taken down to fit.  Black beryl mags fit both like a glove.

How about  a RobArm Vepr in 5.56?

The only three I have experience with are the Galil, SAR-3, and the VEPR.  All of them work, and all of them work fine with their respective magazines. The Galil is the heaviest but the most accurate of the examples I have.  The VEPR is a bit heavy for an AK as well, but is close to the Galil.  The SAR-3 is the lightest but it barely trails the others in accuracy.  Really, I would buy any of the three again or if I ever saw one at a good price.  No real complaints (except the converted AK-74 mag that Century provided with the SAR-3 sucks and the 50 round Galil magazines can be unwieldy at times.....I'd stick with the metal 35's).

Most people on here love the SLR 106. I know I do. Want a cheap AK look at WASR and Yugo in 7.62x39.

Though the Definitive Arms conversion is pricey, the drop-in adapter from Texas AK Designs, formerly Magnolia State Armory, and distributed by The Canis Group, is still available*** and it works. I bought one for and installed it into my SAR-3. It required 3 hours at my workbench carefully dremeling material away on both the rifle and the adapter, and only USGI's and PMags work in it (are there any other mags? ;) ), but it works great and though the fit is looser than original now, a Weiger still locks in and feeds just fine.

***The item is as of this posting backordered. The Canis Group only accept PayPal. Contact them for an estimation on their next run and order a month before they expect to get it back in stock.

I don't like the idea of having to remove material from the rifle.
