I did a search but couldnt come up with anything, although I'm sure this has been covered quite a bit.
Anyways, what are the performance differences between the 5.45 round and the 7.62 round in the AK platform? Is the 5.45 round a more effective manstopper? What about penetration, is the 7.62 or 5.45 round better at penetration? I understand the 7.62 round is legal for deer hunting so I assume it has better terminal ballistics?
Thanks!

So to sum up...
5.45 for 2 legged hunting?
7.62 for 4 legged hunting?

What about accuracy? I've heard the 5.45 is more accurate, but how much so? Are we talking maybe 1/4" 3 shot groups more accurate, or are we talking twice as accurate? I do realize thats heavily gun dependent as well as shooter dependent, but as an average, how much better accuracy could one expect from a 5.45 over a 7.62?

5.45 is much more accurate..

I want an ak74!

I feel retarded...but here goes. What does the MOA actually stand for?

I plan on deer hunting with my CAR stocked mak90 with a red-dot. I can shoot it as good as any other gun I own. I like it. But I do what an AK that shoots a 5.45 or a 5.56....but either way if something happens and I need to shoot someone I think the 7.62 will get the job done...and well.

MOA=Minute Of Angle

The 'Rule of Thumb' is that 1MOA = 1" at 100yds, 2" at 200yds, and so on up...

It's used as a measurement of firearm accuracy because it rougly estimates the size of a perticular gun's 'probable cone of fire'....

Many bolt actions are referred to as 'Sub-MOA' because they produce groups under 1" at 100yds.

The AR family is usually in the 1-2MOA range

The AK family generally lands in the 2-4MOA range

And so on...

Makes sense. Glad I got that out of the way.

One good thing about the 7.62 is that mags and ammo is cheaper and easy to find. And within a 0 - 250 yards or so with a decent shooter it is and will ruin day. I bet less recoil would make the guns much easier to shoot accuratly and to control.

I've shot piles of deer with the 7.62....FMJ, soft-points- it doesn't matter. They work well on deer at typical (less than 100yds) range.

The 5.45 has plenty of penetration, and I wouldn't be hesistant in the least to use it on deer if a good broadside or frontal shot presented itself. Granted, the margin for error is smaller with the 5.45

A double lung hit is 100% fatal, No matter which caliber is used.

You can kill a deer...or human for that matter with about any caliber. Just have to make a good shot. Which would actually be easier to do with a 5.45. But a 5.45 probably isn't legal to hunt with. Althought I think .223 is legal to hunt deer with here.

The 5.45 is superior just because of the less recoil I think. Don't get me wrong I love my 7.62 AK-103 but it does have "some" recoil. It kicks harder than my 7.62 NATO STG-58 (FAL). I still like it though and I can get pretty good follow up shots on it. It just seems to be a pretty snappy recoil. For hitting targets on the run or for quick shots I think the 5.45 would win hands down. That being said I could work with either.

Just like I love me some 50.63 Para FAL's I love the M4 too (especially now that the piston driven upper is out! )
