AAR ShivWorks Edged Weapon Overview (EWO) class Jacksonville, FL 1/18
Shiv Works
Finally got to train with Southnarc. I've been watching his schedule off and on for 10 years, but time was never right or nothing was close enough. Saw a class listed just a couple hours away and jumped on it.
The class was Edged Weapons Overview. Obviously a knife related class, but in reality
a lot more than that.
A good portion of the first morning was spent on managing unknown contacts. This was done as all the training was done, first explained and demonstrated, then done via a complying partner, then finally pressure tested against a non complying partner. If people have not seen this type of material before, this section alone is worth the price of admission IMO. Pressure testing of this is a lot harder than just talking about it on the net.
Moved into work against the knife later in the morning of the first day and this included a lot of grappling work. Won't go into everything, suffice to say show up to class for more.
I've done a fair amount of knife related classes over the years and I've grappled a fair amount of time as well. But it's hard to find training partners into combining both of these things so most of my progression of this has been on my own. This course really helped tie the ends on a lot of concepts .
The final exercises were awesome. Students wore FIST suit helmets, two had knives and one hand on boxing gloves. For 90 seconds the "good guy" beginning from a clinch with the other knifer, had to fight off both of them. Lots of lessons there and a whole lot of fun! Once your rotation of "good guy" was over you rotated into the bad guy with the knife role and finally the bad guy beating the hell out of the good guy role. Helluva lot of fun all the way around.
I didn't take any pics, perhaps another student will come along and post a pic or two.
Great class, I look forward to training with Craig again and would highly recommend the class.
