A “Known-Distance Appleseed” is a 2-day program that teaches the shooting out to 400 yards, including target detection and ranging; measuring and compensating for wind; scopes and reticles; MOAs and mils, boxing your sights, battle-sight zero and come-ups, and more.
Appleseed events are hosted nationwide. If you've done a 25 yard Appleseed, the KD Appleseed is the next step to regaining your American heritage by becoming a rifleman.
On Day 1 we heard some history stories, spent time zeroing at 100 yards, 200 yards, 300 yards, and 400 yards, as well as shooting a Qualification (AQT).
On Day 2 we heard a few more bits of history and spent time discussing Range Estimation along with a practical range estimation field exercise. We did a 1 shot "Morgan's Shingle" qualification (1 chance to hit a 7x10" steel plate, cold bore, from 250 yards), and shot multiple AQTs.
The weather wasn't easy. It was cold and particularly windy the first day. Appleseed AQTs are much tougher than the Army Rifle qualification, and high-dollar, Go-fast gear was no guarantee of success.
Round count was under 250. Leave the cheap Russian steel case ammo at home. Free-floats and Match ammo rule. Magnification helps.
I'd done the KD before and just missed it. This time I was prepared, having a LaRue, match ammo, ACOG, and zeroed with all at the relevant ranges the week before.
Made KD Rifleman, qualified on the Morgan's Shingle, and also earned a Winterseed patch due to the adverse weather conditions.
The event was a fun and true challenge. Look forward to earning a distinguished patch next time.
