I am considering adding a custom semi precision rifle to the collection looking at the 6.5 caliber. But I really like shooting bolt actions and I would like to upgrade into a better custom bolt action, looking at a magnum 30 caliber for extended long distance. Which do you recommend first? I am considering the semi due to the political climate. I do have AR 15 type rifles but nothing larger for the AR variants. What are your recommendations? Or maybe I should forget it and just go with a pistol caliber carbine. I know the answer get all but which one first?

I honestly don’t think you have to worry about the political climate as far as semi’s go. It’s been “on the brink” for almost 10 years. If you want precision you will spend less on a bolt gun than you would on an equally accurate gas gun.

I would figure out what goals you want to accomplish with said gun, and go from there.

Savage 110BA in 338LM

[Last Edit: AKSnowRider] [#3]
300 rum is a great choice, cases are cheaper then 338LM or 30-378 Weatherby and it is a very accurate round...I am loading a 230 grain Berger target hybrid @3200fps, out of a R-700 with a 28" Bartlein barrel...Nosler, Norma, RP, Bertram all build brass and a few more top brass manufacturers are supposed to be bringing cases out soon..Pretty simple to get out past 2000 yards...And down the road if you decide you want more, a simple rebarrel can turn it into 338 edge which is a step up from 338LM...

Is that for the rifle only or is that rifle, scope, rings, etc?

Boomer calibers sound great in theory but they are expensive to shoot, the recoil gets old and most people don't have the range to take advantage of their capability. You can get out past 1000yds easily with a 6.5 or 6mm and shoot them all day long comparatively cheaply to a boomer caliber.

For $5K all in I would spend $2k on a rifle, $2k on an optic and $1k on accessories and ammo. Things like the Tikka Tac A1, Ruger RPR or Bergara B14 HMR are all easy turn key options that just need good glass and match ammo to perform very well. All can be had for well under $2k allowing to put more of the budget towards glass or ammo.

Tikka tac a1, vortex 4.5-27 and a spuhr mount was going to be my suggestion.

What type of extended distance.  I rarely recommend people get a magnum of any sort unless they are going to use it for ELR often.

My uncle shot a 100lb white tail last year from about 30 feet with his 300rum and wanted to bitch about how it always runs so much meat

I shot a caribou back in 2012 at about 10 foot...didn't loose any meat but I put it thru the ribs right behind the shoulders..it did destroy the heart and lungs though...But I agree if you are shooting deer size game at short distances, you really don't need full power rum for it..Now they do make lighter loads from Remington for it, level 1 is 30-06 level, level 2 is 300WM and level 3 is 300 rum...

With your budget a Sako TRG is an excellent option.

A boomer isn’t needed for ELR. We regularly take 6.5x47 past a mile, and when conditions are right we even take 6x47. This is first and second round hits, with very repeatable accuracy. A non magnum long action 6.5 like the 6.5 - 284 would be an excellent choice for a 2k yard rifle in most conditions as long as punching steel is your goal. I’d be comfortable with using it on deer sized game out to 900 where it falls to 1000 lbs energy. Also the 6.5 PRC would be an excellent short action mag round with similar capabilities as the 6.5-284.

I really believe you can not go wrong with a Tikka. Shoots great & real smooth to operate.
