Looking to get a tripod set up for my hunting and shooting.  I've looked at the Slik offerings, and also at the 055 and the 294 now.  When I'm looking, what kind of a weight rating should I be looking for?  Standard or grip style ball head?  As for price, I don't see myself spending over $150-$200 for the tripod and head combined, excluding the rest.  I'm kind of lost right now, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was in the same boat, and I am glad I got the Manfrotto 55Pro, the Q2 Magnesium head, it really is that much better than stepping down. I also bought the hog saddle and I love it..... this is my heaviest gun I own and it doesn't budge.

You can save some money and use the PIG saddle versus the HOG.

I have both the PIG and HOG, and for me the HOG really is worth the extra money, in design, weight, etc.... Now I still use my PIG though for spotting scope setup.

Since price is a factor, what would I be missing by going with a 190xprob with a 496rc2 ball head?  I found one for $170 for the combo.  Good setup?  What will the 055 do that the 190 won't, besides the load rating?

We has bushnell tripods in the Marines.

Although, I think the kit we had goes for around $600-700 if you can find them.

McGavin, I'm looking at the 468 magnesium ball head after being unimpressed with the pistol grip.

I'm looking to be able to ever so gently adjust the rifle and it stays, as opposed to having to hold it that smidge and the head wanting to bounce back to the previous locked position.

Will the ball heads allow me to do that?

Thanks

you want one tall enough you wont have to extent the center column. all strength is lost when you do that. Also less leg sections is usually better. IE 3>4 etc. like most things you get what you pay for. dont skimp and you will have something you can use for a LOT of stuff, photography, spotting scope, shooting, hell I use my manfroto tripods for my FPV RC shit as well.

I've been looking at the Manfrotto tripods as well. What is the difference between the 190 and the 055 carbon fiber tripods?  They seem to be the two that get the most press for Precision rifles.

I have a Manfrotto carbon fiber one for photo work and it's worth every penny on the weight savings. Def get that one if you can toss the extra coin.

That said, I've run my rifle in my hog saddle on a metal one and I still didn't feel like it was sturdy enough.

I plan on bringing paracord to tie a rock or something field expedient to the center of the tripod to help secure it and weight it down.
