I attended a long range clinic this weekend and got to spend time on a 600 yard line with experienced shooters. Conditions were less than ideal with gusting crosswinds and the mirage at 90+ degrees was intense.

Shooting a bone stock Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor with a low-end factory Vortex Crossfire 4-12 and Hornady American Gunner ammo. I did mount a Harris bipod. It was the most fun I've had in awhile. I learned more about rifle shooting in 6 hours than I have in probably the last 10 years. And now I want to do it more.

So what are some of the basic equipment purchases I need to be looking at? My hard case was a pain to move around so I'm thinking a soft case of some sort should be first. How are the bags that double as a shooting mat? I'd like to purchase decent equipment without getting crazy.

Recommendations?

OP, I use an AIM drag bag(UK) but a cheaper line that was  well recommended was the Tac Force dragbags....

I chose the Aim bag due to it better fit my needs and the reviews and recommendations were out standing on it..it is extremely high quality and very well thought out..My rifle is 52" with the stock screwed all the way in..they offer bigger bags but this one fit my rifle perfect...

I never use a shooting mat either for the same reason but if you wanted something to cover the ground a TAB cover would work or a lighter weight mat that you could fold up and put in your pack, which is the way to carry gear.

As for your rifle set up I say shoot it until you feel the rifle is holding you back. Put money into ammo and practice.

I would like some sort of bag. The mat is a requirement - too many thorns and fire ants not to use one.

The rifle is very much up to the task. The scope on the other hand fell short. I wanted to do the 1000 yard part of the class but I couldn't see shit at 1000 and didn't have the elevation for it. I'm conflicted here because I would like to keep an adjustable scope on this rifle because it is my go-to hunting rifle.  But I understand an adjustable scope with the kind of range I need isn't going to be inexpensive.

Part of me is wanting to buy a RPR in 6.5 and throw a Night force on it. The other part of me wants to do what I can with my hunting setup and forget about the 1000 yard range.

It is more money then you might want to spend but what about the vortex PST-2?  I use the rifle pictured above as my hunt rifle as well, with my broken body from a car wreck I can't do more then ride in a buggy up on the ridge lines and if we see a good animal shoot from there...I went with the razor gen2  4.5-27x56 and absolutely love it...

Or if on the cheaper side then a Midway mat

And a standard bag
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/939158677/midwayusa-heavy-duty-scoped-rifle-case

The scope is something you shouldn't really skimp at in long range. Buy a nicer scope that will be in the 3-15/18x range and it will work fine to 1000 if you wanted but if you wanted less expensive maybe a Strike Eagle 3-18x. A PST Gen II would be a good choice if you could spend some more.

Scope-wise I think I am willing to spend ~$1000 with the hopes of covering both hunting and precision bases.

Thanks - that looks like a good place to start.

In the wide-open spaces of Nevada hunting, most of my shots are 6x+ so 5-25x will be fine.

The 5-25x Gen II PST weighs in at almost 2 lbs. It isn't light.
I'm not sure I'd want it on a "walking around" hunting rifle, but it is awesome on my RPR.

Maybe look into the Razor HD LH 3-15x42 ???

Funny, I had this experience last weekend with the same result.
I took a stock Rem 700 ATX out... within and hour of shooting and being allowed to shoot a few purpose built guns,  I realized the stock that I thought was fine didn't fit, the trigger was crap and the scope was not adequate.
Looking at the price of some of this stuff, I'm thinking a 3rd mortgage maybe acceptable.   ;-)

I have a t3x super lite that shoots as well as my precision rigs and is at like 8 pounds fully loaded with bipods etc. I would rather use it for a long range rig then taking one of my super ass heavy precision rigs hunting.

I know the post is a little old er but have you made optics changes, Stock changes and bag choices?

Optic i would look at Primary Arms ACSS Apolo 6.5 CM Reticle. I have it on my CM AR and love it. It is flawless. Scope

For a bag look at the Midway USA Drag Bag. it has back pack straps to carry with and a few good pockets for storage. Also has loops to add stuff to. Bag.

Stock upgrades. Look at the Magpul Hunter. It is a great option for little money. Stock
