How helpful is it to uniform primer pockets and flash holes on run of the mill once fired brass in order to help attain small velocity speads and SDs?

I'm considering buying the tools to do it and don't want to waste my money if it isn't worth it.

I typically use once fired brass that I pick up at the range.

The calibers I would be wanting to do this for would be 7mm rem mag, 300 win mag, .308 win and .270 win.

The tools are cheap. I did it for 308 but I was using new lapua brass. My max range was olny 200-300 yards. Small things for consistency make bigger a difference at longer ranges. What range are you stretching out to? Some sort brass by weight or case volume for long range and neck sizing and turning for consistency. For mixed range brass may not make a huge difference but it won't hurt. Flash holes and primer pockets are pretty much a do once process.

On range brass? That's not worth your time. If you want to start chasing down low SDs, start with good quality brass that's all the same.

Then look at neck tension & primers selection.


What is your application that you want low SDs?

I shoot out to 500y and beyond when I can find places to do it. Beyond that my goal is to produce sub MOA hunting ammo that is consistently sub moa with out inexplicable fliers that occasionally happen and that I don't feel I pulled.

By fliers an example is when I shot my 7mm Rem Mag tikka t3x lite last year on paper at 500y for data and had a five shot group where four bullet holes were sub half MOA and one flier blew the group up to 1 MOA.

I basically want to eliminate variables that don't leave me wondering if I'm going to have a flier in the field.

What specific makes and models of tools would you guys recommend that are affordable but produce good results? I was looking at 21st century reloading for example and thier caliber specific deburring tools are at the very top end of what I'd want to spend unless they are true game changers with the results they produce.

I looked at tools like the Lyman deburring tool and since all my brass is already chamfered at the case mouth I can see myself getting different depth cuts.

Does it do anything... idk.  I don't do it on my plinking ammo but my precision loads I go the extra mile and do the primer pockets, flash hole, neck uniformity, ect.
