Would $450 be a good price for an Remington m540xr if its in good shape?  I am thinking about picking it up for my son to start using.  I used to shoot competitively in college but after I graduated and got married I sold my gear now my son is getting old enough he thinks he might want to compete.

Yes, I would pounce on that, l would be tempted at that price just for a barreled action, if the bbl wasn't shot out.

In the past no, now, yes. They keep creeping up in value.
This is just my opinion, YMMV on market values in your locale.
I used to have a 540X, it was extremely accurate.

I paid $525 for one in excellent condition with sights and some accessories a few months ago.   $450 is a good price for one.
