There are plenty of stories about Kidd barrels, too. My favorite is wearing out the shallow rifling by cleaning.
That's possible, but it points to abusive methods, something like using JB Bore polish at every cleaning or pushing carbon fouling through the barrel on dry patches. I expect failing to use a bore guide should be included amongst the suspects.
The Kidd barrel on my gun has not been shooting as well as I expect. I need to check for a carbon ring, then give the barrel a cleaning back to bare metal. The last time I did that I needed almost a box of ammunition to get it settled down. I should also probably change the buffer and the recoil spring, maybe the guide rod, and check the extractor for damage to help insure that doesn't hinder chambering.
Maybe unfortunately, my gun has a threaded receiver and barrel, so I'll probably need to send the gun to Kidd to get it rebarreled if it comes to that extreme. I can also retire it from benchrest shooting and use it for NLR22 matches and similar.
