The rifle was probably built for less than $2000 without the scope. Even with accessories, loading equipment, bullets, and cases, $5k would have been hard to crack in the '80's starting with a XP-100 action.
There may be more money sunk later, in particular in the stock and new barrels.
I had another idea for a buyer late last night, look around for a ground squirrel and prairie dog shooter.
6PPC is still in common use, that has nothing to do with whether the gun is "old technology"; there is a host of far older cartridges in common use, too. That doesn't mean the gun is competitive, it's an old attempt to build the best, and they were good enough shooting against similar Model 700's and 40X's to affect the availability of XP-100 pistols now. There are better guns now, and like I said above, the gun might be competitive in club level matches, but it's not likely to place very well at a regional or national match.
