Hey all,

Remington 700 .308, mag capacity 4, but if I push the rounds in the mag down I can controlled feed another round into the chamber and still have 5.

Just traded into a Remington ADL .223, testing it out it has a mag capacity of 5, but I can also do the same, push the rounds down and push the bolt forward on a 6th round.

Is this a standard practice that is just so common nobody talks about it?  Or am I crazy for doing it?

EDIT:  As there appears to be some confusion, I'm talking about the ADL style of 700, or all guns with an internal mag loaded through the top.  I'll have to see if my Turkish Mauser in 8mm will take a 6th round by doing this.  Never tried it before.

I would be worried about it not being able to feed.

Never tried it though. Accidentally did it with AR mags before. They didn’t work too well

I see it done all the time on bolt guns.

Yeah, there is enough play in the mag that the 308 has always been able to fire and feed.  I've been doing it this way for years to be able to have a 5 shot group on the same target without having to reload in the middle of a string (other than working the action).

Looking forward to confirming the 223 works the same way, but since it already holds 5 which I would be using for groups, the 6th would only be loaded in a time of "use".

So it's just so common that nobody talks about it, which is why I have never heard it before.  Makes sense.

M-14 mag is better

I normally chamber a round, remove the magazine and load another round.  Same outcome, different method.

Standard procedure for Remington 700. I did have one new 700 ACC that needed some work to just hold 4 in the mag. 308 win rifle.

Pretty common, even the manufacturer has always said holds 4+1, meaning 1 in the chamber, 4 in the blind mag...
