Hey guys, I am building a new rifle.
Just sold my REM 700 AAC-SD in 308 to help fund the new rifle. I have a REM 700 in 6.5CM and a Ruger American Predator in 6.5CM in a Magpul hunter stock. (Awesome rifle) Couple ARs in 556 and a 20” AR in 6.5Grendel. I do not hunt. This would be for fun and long range. I am thinking a 300 Win Mag, but when I look at the stats, it’s only going to give me a bit more than the 6.5CM. I do reload several calibers, so no issue finding ammo. |
Been down this road and I still have no good result, as you get faster barrel life decreases keep that in mind, 300 win mag is a good option, what do you consider not much gain from the creedmoor? Another good option would be a 300 prc if you’re looking for long range.
This is going to be my first semi custom. Barrel life not that much of an issue. For me to burn out a barrel will take a lot of time and money.
Will take a look at 300PRC. I am thinking 300 WM is about 250 yards more than the 6.5CM. |
308 Win Mag was Chris Kyle's fav rifle
So how far you plan on shooting?
I am thinking I would like to get out to 1200-1500? Maybe even one day get out and do one of those Mile classes.
What are you looking to do at long range? 250 yards more for the 300 might be close but the energy is gonna be a lot higher, guess the question is how far is long range too.
Just shooting paper. I don’t hunt and do not plan on it either.
Just paper punching or steel at 1000+. Most shooting will probably be between 200 and 600. |

A magnum is a waste if shooting under 1200 regularly. Actually just sold one I traded for about 2 years ago. Had magnums for years and then sold them as I never used them and got the itch and then went to the range with it a couple times and then it sat in the safe the past year even though I have a range with a mile target. I would say think long and hard before dropping a bunch of money. |
Your Creedmoor is fine for what you are wanting to do with it. Spend the money on ammo, and some training from a reputable long range instructor/school.
Magnums are really good at putting more energy on target than short action rounds, but they will take advantage of improper fundamentals, and they are fatiguing to shoot over long stretches. Get good with your Creedmoor, and worry about a big boomer later. |
A real 1 MOA All Day shooter.
What are the specs on your current 700 6.5? What I would do is build a nice heavy longer barrel 6.5 Creedmoor for a good start.
If you are dead set on stepping into a magnum there are lots of options. Any 7, 30, 338 magnum set up for long range will do more than a Creedmoor but at a huge cost across the board Weight, Barrel Life, Component cost, recoil, noise. If we're just dreaming with your money I'd like to do a 338 Norma or Lapua with a 30"+ barrel. |

Not deadset on a magnum at all. My Rem700 in 6.5CM I still have is a 26" varmint barrel. Put it into a KRG Bravo with a triggertech flat bow trigger and wears a Nikon FX1000 6-24X52.
Was actually even thinking of building up another .308 with aa 24" barrel, but then the Creedmoor has better ballistics past 500. So maybe just build the custom in 6.5 Creedmoor. |
If you think 300 wm won't give you much more than 6.5 then i don't think anything will.
Gonna have to go 338 lupua or 50 bmg My recent search for a longish range hunting rifle took me down the 280 ackley road. Hitting the range for the first time tmrw with it. Performance is on par with a 7 rem mag but in a non mag case. |
Unless you wanna keep everything simple with the creedmoor I’d build a 6.5-47 Lapua, and if barrel life isn’t a concern how about a 28 nosler?
Honestly I would stick with the 6.5cm and spend the extra cash on upgrading your current 700. Possibly throw some money into a trigger upgrade, better chassis, action truing, rebarrel, and possibly new glass. 6.5 will do everything you want if you do your part.
My current Rem700 shoots fine right now. Happy with it. No sense in spending money on it. Its 1 MOA all day with my handloads.
I want to build a custom (semi). Basically build myself a nice rifle. Custom action, carbon fiber barrel (maybe), nice stock (Maybe Grayboe? Can't see spending $1200 on a McMillan). I was honestly just wondering if I should get a bigger caliber, but it seems 6.5CM will do everything I want. So I guess I will just build it in 6.5CM. |

View Quote Take a look at the Bighorn Origin action for that build. With it you can change bolt face for later if you want to make the rifle a short magnum or even go to something smaller like a .223. Just change bolt face and barrel and new caliber. Also take a look for a Manners stock with the mini chassis. Just drop the action in and torque down and you have a DBM. No need to bed or buy bottom metal so takes that cost off. |
OP, where do you normally shoot?
We have the CCC range near Millican that goes to 1200 (I think maybe 1400). You can stretch the rifle's legs there. The range policy limits cartridges to 30-cal at the top end. |

@Rob01, I am actually on the waiting list for the Mack Bros Evo Stainless and already have a KRG Bravo and Trigger Tech Flat bow already on hand. Just need the action and barrel, but I will take a look at that action. Thanks.
@Sinister, I shoot at a range in Fort Worth by the race track I think it’s called Quail Creek? It’s only 100 yds so I just go there to sight i. The scope. I just moved to TX so still need to find places to shoot. Will look into CCC. Thanks. |

Oth work with the Origin. The Origin is about $875 but will save money in the long run if you plan to have different calibers. Also with the Origin you can order shouldered prefit barrels so no need to send the action anywhere or mess with nuts and gauges. |

I was just looking at that. Seems quite nice. It is about $300 more though. Probably worth it.
Barrel is where I am having issues. Should I go Carbon Fiber or just stainless (good mfg for either) was thinking of ordering from Precision Firearms. |

View Quote Unless you need to lose every last ounce I would go stainless any day of the week. And yup they are about $300 more but if you wanted a 300 WSM or a .223 in a new rifle a full build will be more. 😉 |
Ok. So stainless on the barrel. One choice done! Thanks.
I probably will not be changing calibers though, but will be looking into it. |
Are you having a smith put the barrel on or doing a Remage style?
Thinking the Remage style, but after tools, might be the same cost as a gunsmith, but then if I purchase the tools, I can make changes myself.
That why I was asking as setting up to do yourself can be better long run no matter which action you get. And even with the MacBros you can change calibers but they just have to be the same head size.

.30-06. Maybe AI.

You might look thru some of this guys videos OP, he has been actually using all these most popular cartridges in real testing to see what is and isn't working..might save you some headaches...
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs3sYk1tuP5Er95EniC-uMw As far as an Action, Defiance offers their tenacity action at a very reasonable cost and it does not need to go to a smith for every barrel, you call your barrel builder and tell him its for a tenacity and he can spin it up and mail it to you, you spin off the old, then thread on the new and verify headspace... |

View Quote Or you can just order a 6.5 barrel for the Origin and have a switch barrel set up. Something to think about. |

If I were you, I would go with 6.5 PRC. With Hornady 147's it will go as far and as accurately as the 300 WM (I sold my 300 WM when I bought my 6.5 PRC). You can use the same bullets as your 6.5 CM.
