It’s basically done. It took longer than expected (90 minutes) because the barrel nut was brutally over-torqued to the receiver. But man she looks and feels fantastic.  It now weighs a tad over 8lbs w/out optics and a magazine. I’m sure it lost a few pounds  because the 20” SS bull barrel and huge SS gas block were pretty heavy.

I installed a new BA 16” with a 1/10 twist mated to a Seekens low profile adjustable gas block. The Armalite 15” mlok aluminum hand guard is extremely light and I’m really digging the slim profile.

The new trigger / trigger guard will be installed tomorrow. I’m not happy with the RMR mount so I’m ordering a different one.

I’ll post a few photos of the finished product when I get to that point.

Nice! Holding you to the pictures and a range report.

Here's the kicker. The new BA barrel/barrel extension is a DPMS style. So I had to purchase a DPMS BCG, which works nicely in the Armalite receiver.  Everything mates beautifully.  Go/No Go headspace check is GTG.

Cool! now you need to take the left over parts and build a .243win or 7mm-08. Or maybe even a Creedmoor.

Was it necessary to change the BCG?

I changed to a DPMS configuration barrel and extension, and the headspace was good with OEM Armalite BCG.

The trigger it came with is a sweet two stage.
What are you planning on doing with it?

ETA  - like what you're doing with it.

Thanks.

All the parts that are being replaced will eventually be sold. I just want to make sure the carbine config is going to be non-problematic.

Everything I read about using an Armalite BCG in a Armalite receiver, with a DPMS barrel extension, was a no-go.  The issue(s) were not specific to improper Headspace. I didn't want to take a chance.

I'm glad yours worked out good.

Thanks, I’ll have to go back and look at it a bit more to be safe.

I didn't have an Armalite,  but I did use the 16" BA barrel,  Seekins adjustable gas block and BA BCG. My upper, lower, and handguard are all Stag. The scope is a placeholder until I figure out what I really want.. This was my "moved back to Texas" celebration build. It is a light rifle compared to my 20" 6.5 PSA. That rifle with the same can is almost musket length!

That turned out to be false in most cases, I just burned out my original T barrel this year. I replaced with a LW that is DPMS pattern. I bought a set of gauges and the headspace was good to go with mix match. Now you have a spare BCG i case something happens to one of them.

Looks great!  I've updated mine a lot over the years.  It was originally one of the old arfcom annual group buy models.

It would probably balance REALLY nice with a Vltor Emod stock on it!

That looks really good!
Love to see how it shoots!

How much weight do you think you saved going from the factory set up to what you have now?

I easily shaved off a few pounds. The 20" SS bull barrel,  SS gas block and rifle length stock with buffer components are very heavy.

I’ll weigh them tonight and report back.

I knew the barrel was heavy, my dad had the same gun and he just sold it because he didnt shoot it very much.
I had know idea how heavy it was though....5 lbs 3.8 oz is ridiculous.....

I hope the upgraded version shoots very well for you.

I'm replacing the muzzle brake with a SilencerCo unit and also the factory charge handle with a nice extended handle from Seekins. She's done after that. (famous last words)

I finally made it out to the [indoor] range, today. The trip was specifically to test for function. It’s a short range so testing for accuracy was moot. I was pleasantly surprised by the soft recoil.  It was very tolerable. I was shooting Fed 168gr SMK BTHP and Nosler 168gr Custom Competition BTHP ammo.

I had a few FTE issue at first because the gas adjustment was screwed in too much so it took a few rounds to get it dialed in. Once I hit the sweet spot it was consistent ejection and feeding. All in all about 25 rounds down the pipe. She’s a keeper.

I can’t wait to take her out to 100 yards and beyond.
