9mm Bolt Gun (Page 1 of 2)

This may not be a "precision " rifle, but it is different.  I live in NY where my options are limited and I had a hankering for this project.  I took a Rock Island 22 TCM bolt gun and had a local smith rebarrel it to 9mm. I know Special Interest Rams makes a version, but I had this one custom made to my liking.
I have 5 and 10 round mags for it and there are 17s available if I lived in a free state.  The can is fake. I like the look of it.
I haven't shot it yet as I am still working on optics configuration.
Just thought I would share.

I will start with a red dot.  It has dovetail mounts up top so I either go with a cheapo red dot or use a rail adapter.  I tried a red dot on the rail adapter but it sits too high.  I am trying a cheapo dovetail set up.  Depending on how that works, I may go with dovetail rings and a 4X scope.

I've heard that these guns are pretty rough. Are you happy with the quality?

What barrel did you use?

Sorry. Private joke between Mark and I.  Essentially, I am hinting that multiple guys will be fouling his gun.

I gave it a quick once over before the work and it seemed fine. But the gunsmith made it a work of art. No issues with the quality.  He used an Odin Arms barrel.

I'm building one of the rhineland .45 mauser kits now and I have a Ruger 77/44. They are fun and cheap to shoot.

one of the rhineland conversions just after my front sight flew off. Makes 230gn pills run out at 2K fps (very custom wildcat load on special brass)

My Rhineland as it sits. The barrel is too large for the rear sight, so I'm weighing my options on that. I'd really like to keep the military style sights and upper handguard.

Not true.

They are not as nice as Kimber of Oregon's Model 82 center fire, the design from which they were cloned, but their build quality is on par with any $500-600 bolt gun. The wood is rather plain. The matte black bluing and absence of external tool marks makes up for that.

I'd read a few reviews that claimed the fit and finish was terrible. Glad to hear that isn't 100% true.

Old thread, but still curious about these conversions.
I found this write up and started thinking i might need to have one built. Anyone know a gunsmith that can do it?

My odd thought of the day.

We have bolt action uppers for the AR in 5.56

Why can't the same concept work for a 9mm?

Are you talking about side chargers, or is there an actual bolt action upper?

Yes bolt action 5.56 uppers.  I thought they had been a thing since AW bans existed.

I did one recently.  Well, I bought the donor rifle and had an Arfcommer short-chamber a barrel for me.  I just had to ream out for headspace when I installed it.  Very easy. I also shortened the stock some.

I have a spare rifle in the safe and another barrel blank in my barrel bucket.  Here is a pic to show the size difference. lol.

Does anyone have the thread specs for the barrel?

I was thinking I might be able to have one spun up with a Savage style barrel nut to make installation simple.

ETA - IIRC the receiver face isn't flat so I'd have to fix that too.

Barrel tenon measures 0.745" OD on the major diameter with 20 TPI.

Been wanting something like this for a while.  PTG makes bottom metal for a Rem 700 to take AR15 mags.  CMMG makes 9mm conversion mag kits.  Bolt head is the same as 223Rem.  All I would need is a barrel.  My only concern is reliable feeding.  Thoughts?

I wanted to do the same thing with my Mossberg MVP SBR that is a 5.56 rifle. Several people helped point me away from the idea.  Feeding will be the big issue, like you said.  It's a large jump from the offset 9mm mag to the chamber.  A collapsible chute of some sort would have to be fabbed up is what I gathered.
Snag an Armscor 22tcm bolt before they disappear.

Those are crazy. I wanted to have a chassis system opened up for mine but my short attention span moved me onto other projects.

That's pretty sweet.

Giving this some thought tonight.  Mossberg MVPs use AR mags.  Take a 223 MVP, open up the bolt face a little, swap out the 223 barrel with a 9mm barrel, and then use an Endomag converter to convert a Pmag to take 9mm.

The MVP thing is what started me down the 9mm bolt action road.
Not sure if the picture will work.  I can't figure out imgur on my iPad.

Any idea if they will eject that short little 9mm case?

As in, does the case fall off the extractor before the ejector kicks it out?

Wow! I have wanted a Spanish Destroyer carbine in 9mm, and those are rare enough, I love that the .22TCM can be converted, although not as common as the Mossberg MVP!

I will def be adding the MVP in .223 to my short list to convert to 9mm. Currently I have two bolt action .45acp's.

I really enjoy shooting pistol calibers due to the ease and rapid (lack of boring case prep) reloading.

Does anyone have a good smith they recommend for doing a 9mm conversion to a Rock Island 22TCM bolt gun?
