The guy next to me last weekend was shooting a 300 prc loaded with 215 Berger’s. At 600 yds with 15 mph wind at 2 o’clock I had dialed 2.5 minutes and stil got blown around. I was able to stay under 1moa for my best group but by the skin of my teeth. The guy next to me didn’t adjust and held dead on. He was maybe 3” left and dispersion was excellent.

Hmmmm.

You aren’t helping!

But in all seriousness. When I started hand loading 25 years ago my nature pushed me to ask the question, how good can my handloads be? I have researched ballistics since I could read. Two calibers have always held my attention, 6.5 and 308. I have multiple 6.5’s now and I have always wanted to load a 215-220 308 bullet in something. I understand the fundamentals of velocity, bc, sd and how bc changes over the trajectory of a projectile. But I am late to the game. I have two fused vertebrae and multiple issues with others. A week ago I attempted to shoot prone and while I was able to shoot an .78 moa challenge target with the Creedmoor, it was too painful to repeat. Simple fact is I am old and my body is fubar but I still love shooting!

But then, I have an Alaska caribou hunt booked with my son for 2022. If I can manage the recoil of a prc or wm during practice it may be the caliber of choice.

I’m rambling but then that’s what old fuckers do...

Actually, the only bullets I can find locally are 108 6mm and the only loads are 6mm Creedmoor.

But that 215 Berger is such a good bullet.....

I have a full custom 6Br that was disgraced by a stock $700 6.5c in heavy wind.

Try and find anything 300 prc right now

I don’t have my steel past 1400 right now so I’m not wasting my 300 prc stuff.

Lol, the other side of the coin.

I realize there is no one gun magic bullet. I guess learning to read wind and making those calls is my immediate opportunity.

no he didnt.  A 15 mph 2 oclock wind will blow that 215 berger 18 to 20 inches at 600 yards.  approx .8 to .9 mil correction.

Damn him! I’ve been thinking about this since Sunday.! Lol

Thanks for the little bit of truth. I never ran the numbers. But his dispersion was much better than mine. So...

Staying sub moa at 600 with that kind of wind is solid shooting no matter how you cut it. Well done!

Sounds like you need to either buy or cry! Give your wife the checkbook! Yeah there is days I miss my .300WM and then I remember setting my barrel back a couple of times after a few hundred rounds.

IMO, unless you shot his rifle in those conditions and got the same results he did, I'd stick with the 6.5CM and just keep shooting. All bullets drift the same amount per second. All you're doing is sending it faster to beat the wind. So just learn how the 6.5 works.

How good can handholds be?  My 6.5 "aggressive" load is 2900 FPS 140 Berger Hybrid (Lapua Brass, BR4 Primer) with SD's of under 10 FPS for 10 shots.  I tune it down for most of my shooting to 2810 FPS, with the same SDs.

600 yards is nothing for a properly-loaded 6.5.  In fact, IPSC targets at 1250 tend not to be too difficult unless the wind is particularly nasty.

Buying a new gun is always an easy decision, because the answer is "yes".  However, buying new optics sucks, because they're not fun and they generally cost more than the gun.

I to like to substitute skill with gear. Really though I have a 300prc but it’s more in a hunting rig. Going out blasting steel or shooting matches with 30 cal magnum rounds gets pricey. I always love seeing the guys at matches shooting 223 and crushing dudes. A good shooter is a good shooter.

I brought my 223 to today’s shoot. I forgot how fun it was to shoot at 600.

I was shooting at 600 this last weekend with my 20” 6.5 Grendel mini action, 10-12mph full value wind at the pits, guttering switchback wind everywhere else.. Everyone else on the line had 6.5CM or in one case a monster 300WM, all with brakes. Yeah those guys had more consistent hits but I had more fun…

I get the thrill of shooting a laser and seeing tiny bugholes at long distance, but I’ll take having to make good wind calls to make good hits any day of the week.

Shot a few day match and one of the guy’s was rolling a 223.  Went 3 for 3 at 1360 on a bear target. Was legit.

I don’t doubt this. The 80gr ELDM has surprised me.

You should try it with the new 220 Bergers.

And save your self money and just re-barrel any mag action rifle you have, like 300 win mag. they are both the same bolt face.

My only mag action rifle is a pre 64 300 h&h supergrade. I think I will keep it in original condition.

I did order a GAP custom but didn’t man up to a 30. I wussed out and ordered a 6.5c. I’ll keep lusting for a 30 but want an every day shooter right now.
