I have a Vortex PST Gen 2 5-25 on my heavy 280 Ackley and love the scope, its a good fit for that gun.   I just got a great deal on another one and mounted it on my 20 in AR for range shooting.  Took it out today and its a joy to shoot off the bench and prone on a bipod printing tight groups with my old eyes. But, it adds weight to the gun and I'm not sure if I like how it looks.  Anyone else running high magnification on their AR and how do you like it?

I have a 4-16 on an 18”. If it works for you does it matter what other people think?

Bench gun? Plinking? Prone coyote/varmint rig? I’d put as much mag as I could on that fucker.

This was my boat gun for a number of years.  I had a 3 power on it but when I moved on shore I put a 4-24x50 Vortex and a bipod.  18 inch heavy ss barrel.  FWIW I installed. LaRue and got rid of the binary trigger.  I oblivious think it looks great.

Thank you.  Since I have been getting serious about reloading I have been spending much more time shooting groups.  The more I do this, the more I find myself wanting better glass and higher magnification.  I guess I'm self conscious because the guys at the range are calling it the Hubble space telescope .

When it comes to precision shooting, weight is not your enemy.  Weight means less felt recoil and less movement of the rifle under recoil, leading to faster follow-up shots or at least more consistent observation of the target under recoil to spot hits or misses.  Weight also  really should not be a factor in optics selection when you’re talking about a 5-25x scope.  Nor should looks.

I thought 5-25x was too much for my 6.5 Creedmoor AR. I went with a 3-15x on that and put a 2-10x on my 5.56 precision AR. I shoot the 5.56 up to 700m, and 10x is fine. If it's just a bench gun, I don't see a problem with the 5-25x, but I think it's too much for a gun see field use with targets at ranges from near to far.

I run the same scope on a 18" AR15 in 5.56mm. The scope works great for my 600yd. shoots. I have to agree with you, it does look kinda funky, especially with the sunshade installed. It's freak'n loooooong and eats up damn near the full length of my handguard (13"). It works, tracks and returns to zero and that's good enough for me. As was mentioned before, you can always go down, but you can't always go up. 10ring

Nothing wrong with that. I run 5-25 or 6-24’s on most of my precision gas guns. Works great at the range for shooting small groups or helping to spot for others when shooting longer ranges. I’m usually in the 10-16x range when shooting from barricades, but it’s nice to dial up when shooting prone at longer ranges. My only comment would be to potentially move the scope back a bit. Perhaps it works for your frame, but I see a lot of people pushing their scopes forward a bit too far just because they have a cantilever mount which inhibits getting a good sight picture/eye box with the higher magnification scopes when going to maximum magnification.

Nice looking guns above.

I might argue that 25x is too much magnification in a 5.56mm gun, but others would say size matters.  Do not over spend for 556.  Viper PST is probably a good choice.  Lower cost, but still quality.  If you go down in magnification, I might recommend a better quality scope like Nightforce

I have a 3x25x50 IOR Valdada aTX Raider on a 20" Rock River Coyote rifle that is a tack drivin' sum bitch out to ~600 yds.

Being I'm an old fart, I really depend on good sharp magnification when shooting semi-long range. YMMV.
