Anyone else getting in on this? I just called in an order for a JP barrel.

Do you use normal AR magazines??? If so, at what capacity?

So on that note: who makes the best 6.8 mags? Preferably something that can be loaded longer like ASC mags can be.

Still waiting to see what barrel options will be available. I’ve had good luck with BA, but I may have to just get a reamer if I want one soon and under 400$. |

Anyone see other companies producing barrels for the .224 Valkyrie?

Rainer Arms has a few 224 V barrels on their website at moment. All OOS but shows photos and details

It looks like BA was considering doing them based on the thread in their industry forum.
|
|
|
Cross Machine Tool said they would have complete uppers on their site in the next few weeks. Think the barrels will be 24.5".
JP and Rainer Arms barrels both will be rifle +2 or +3 gas system depending on length. Will be curious if others go with extended gas as well. |

It seems like suddenly I'm hearing about this in a lot of threads. I looked up the ballistics and it looks pretty impressive. Is there any information on the development of this? I'm weary of getting into new cartridges because it seems like for the first few years there is often a big revision to them (6.8SPC for example).

I've got a custom billet receiver set that my best buddy gave me that I've been wanting to do something with. Think I've finally settled on using them to build a 224V SPR.
I'm actually pretty excited about this new round. I have several 300blk rifles/uppers but was never head over hills for it.. I can't wait to finish this build |

It would seem like the .224 AR would do the same thing w/ about 200 fps more velocity(ie 90 grain bullets at 2800+ fps).

I contacted AR Performance just last week and received a reply that they have NO plans to add .224 Valkyrie to their barrel offering. Sure wish they would.

How will federal brass be? The brass they use in fgmm is soft and won't last beyond 2-3 reloads, with mild loads, before pocket is loose.

Any idea about barrel life? I like the idea of the 90 gr SMK @2750 fps. I am currently running that velocity with the 90s in a 30" Savage FTR 223 and it has been great out to 600 and that is as far as I can shoot locally.
|
|
|
**not to get to off topic but... IS all Federal brass only good for 2-3 reloads? reason i ask is cause I have been shooting mostly LC and FC brass in my 308 and i got about 8 reloads out of them before i started seeing neck splits.

FGMM brass is really soft! Had to stick a piece of Velcro to
the brass deflector so it wouldn’t dent the brass. I also would see only 2-3 reloads until the primer pockets would open up. Criterion is also doing 224 Valkyrie tubes. |
|
|
I'm not too worried about 2-3 firings. Semi-autos are hard on brass. I usually toss brass after 2-3 with even .223 out of a semi.
I am hoping to be able to buy just the brass though. |

Anyone use starline brass or know if its any good? |
|
|
I just measured the COAL of 10 rounds of factory 90 SMK ammo. Average of 2.247" high:2.252" low 2.242". That seems way short considering ASC and PRI mags can be loaded to 2.310" reliably and modified PRI mags to 2.330".
I'm guessing we will see higher velocities once we start handloading. I also have a 22" +2 gas on order. Attached File |

Seems JP is backordered.
Seems like my next build. Unless it fizzles out |

Cost considerations might also drive some PRS shooters to the .224 Valkyrie. Quality .22-Cal bullets definitely cost less than match-grade 6.5 mm projectiles. Therefore, high-volume shooters may find the .224 Valkyrie more affordable to shoot. On the other hand, barrel life for the .224 Valkyrie will likely be shorter than with the 6.5 Creedmoor, so you may end up paying more in the long run. What you save on the cost of bullets you may have to invest in new barrels.” (not sure how reputable this source is. Just found it on a google search.) http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2017/11/new-hot-rod-224-valkyrie-cartridge-from-federal/ |

I think this will be my next build.
JP is backordered right now. But I will wait and hopefully the round takes off |

I hope so. It looks very promising.

Sierra's website calls for a 1x6.5" twist barerl for the 90 gr SMK's. All the barrel offerings I've come across are 1x7".
|
|
|
I am pushing 90s out of à 1/7" at 2750fps without issue to 600yards. Some F class shooters are running them out to 1000 yards from long barrel 223s.

Anyone offering custom twist barrels?
