Hello, I bought a barrel last week that was marketed and sold as a match grade barrel that will shoot sub MOA. Will leave the company's name out of it for now. I have already contacted them with my questions, but they seem to be too busy to respond, so here I am asking.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhxRNcEoRl8&feature=youtu.be Have a look at the video link and let me know if what you see in the freebore/leade is industry standard match grade quality, or if I should be requesting a refund, or replacement. To me, it looks like crap, but I'm not a gunsmith. Would appreciate the informed opinions of actual gunsmiths though. |

That looks perfectly normal for most barrels.
How much did you pay for it? |

Paid 250.

Yeah, that’s just about perfect for a $250 barrel.

Have you shot it? I wouldn't like it but if it shoots good I may just keep it. But I'm not you. If you don't like it send it back. All these manufacturer's are rushing trying to keep up and or make money and quality is suffering. If it's bothering you enough to post this and try to speak to the manufacturer then it will probably always bother you and you will always have regrets

Proud poor boy. MAGA!!
|
Haven’t shot it yet. The manufacturer guarantees no more than 1” MOA so I guess I’ll ask for a new barrel if it won’t deliver.
|
|
|
That is obviously an off center chambering job.
Probably a Bear Creek if I had to guess. I would send it back and ask for another one chambered on the center of the bore. |

"Match grade" just means someone can shoot it in a match.
Absolutely NO guarantees as to even coming close to winning with that one. |

Just because something is made quickly doesn't mean it has to be made sloppy. If they checked their lathe for runout and made sure they were boring on center this shouldn't be a problem. |

If they checked their lathe for runout and made sure they were boring on center this shouldn't be a problem. True enough. The lathe has zero runout. What about the barrel? Is the bore on every blank close enough to centerline that you can just grab the outside and hold the bore within .005”? And if you can’t, how will it be addressed? $15/hr tweaked out recently paroled button smasher? And the bore itself, are they consistent enough to use a pilot with .0005” of clearance or less? How and who will gauge the bore to fit the pilot? There’s a lot that goes into making a good chamber with a straight throat, and that there’s not much that can be done with haste. |

As far as reliably accurate barrels, everyone makes a turd once in awhile.
But off the shelf I would trust White Oak Armament, JP Rifles, Fulton Armory, Compass Lake... That barrel probably was “hand-lapped” in that someone lapped put the reamer marks by hand prior to rifling. That’s not a best practice anymore, IMO, but still has it’s place if the guy doing it has a good feel. |

Well I’ll go out and shoot this barrel to see what it’ll do and if it’s over 1” MOA I’ll get them to honor their guarantee to give my money back and I’ll buy one of the barrels you mentioned above. Fulton Armory is in my price range for sure. |

The barrel maker got back to me today. After reviewing the video basically they said go out and shoot it. See if it will group at or below 1 MOA. If not, they will take care of it. Can't ask for more than that. I'm happy I've established contact with them.

Looks like @lazyengineer 's Odin Works barrel.

View Quote I’d say that with the availability of sub 80$ borescopes, they get more and more inquiries and that’s just the default response. It might shoot decent, but I’m curious for how long if it does. Even the rifling looks like it was rushed. Some good alternative options have been mentioned. I’d toss Rainier Arms into the mix as well. I have quite a few and they have always shot sub moa with good ammo. Rainier (match or Ultramatch) WOA, Craddock and CLE are the barrels that would be at the top of my list. |

Send it back and buy a White Oak Armament instead.
They used a solid pilot reamer that wasn't aligned correctly with the bore. |
|
|
That barrel was not chambered using a reamer that has a tight fitting live pilot as it should have.
It's junk. Send it back for a refund. |
