I haven't got to shoot anything with them yet, but I carried Buffalo Bore 158's a couple times this year.  Should be going around 1500 fps out of a 6 inch and have over 700 lb of energy.

When I lived in Indiana I used my 6" model 66 to harvest a nice little whitetail.  I used PMC 158gr softpoint ammo.  Double lung shot and a short run and he tipped over.  The PMC shot really well from my mod 66.
Now I load cast bullets exclusively.  The wife has claimed both my 357 mags as hers so now I carry a 4-5/8" 45 Colt Blackhawk when outdoors.  If I were to pry one of the 357s from the wife's hands I would still use a 158gr cast bullet if hunting deer.

Any body else have any good loads?

Most 357 ammo is designed and intended as defensive ammo.  As a result, it tends to be big on expansion, at the cost of somewhat reduced penetration.  You've got a 6" barrel, which will give you a bit more velocity than the usual 2 to 4" defensive revolver.  That extra speed will enhance expansion, and cost you some penetration to an even greater degree....

My choice would be a 158 grain jacketed SOFT point.  You'll get expansion but your penetration will be noticeably increased, which will help on shots on big deer that aren't broadside.   Expansion won't be the usual 3/4" mushroom...   It will be more the "riveted flat head' sort of expanded front end.

I miss those partition golds so much. My scoped 686 could clover leaf them at 50 yards.

Any of the hot 180gr. hard cast loads are the next best thing Imo. I've used Grizzly and HSM.

When I hunted deer with .357 I used Leverevolution. Did a lot of damage to the lungs of the deer I shot with it.

Was that out of a rifle or pistol?

Handgun. Taurus 608. You'll probably have to rezero but it did the job well. Have used Leverevolution in .357, .44 and .45-70 handguns. All three got me a deer.

one of the best loads I've ever killed a deer with out of the .357 was  the Federal hardcast load.

wicked..

Can’t go wrong with Buffalo bore.
180gr hard cast if you shoot big deer from a distance, JSP of your choice if they’re smaller or closer.

For a revolver, I would get a medium weight JHP or JSP. One member posted 180 gr bear loads, they may work but a hard cast through a deer wont do much damage. May work for some guys but I shy away from them for deer. I do limit my shots with handguns to 30 yards and closer with iron sights.

I personally load 158 gr XTP for my 4" Smith and Wesson and have had great performance from it. I have some of the FTX bullets loaded in the LeverEvolution ammo but I have heard mixed performance on that.

If shopping factory, I know Grizzly Ammunition loads 158 gr XTP and uses either Jagemann (JAG) or Starline brass. Both are excellent and I would not hesitate to buy that ammo.
Likewise, I believe Buffalo Bore also loads 158 gr XTP which out of a 6" should do very well with a good mix of expansion and penetration

Stay away from cheap JSP ammo like the Remington 125 or 158 gr. The bullet is poorly designed and made in a way that the bullet overexpands and basically spalds outward as if it hit steel from the hydrostatic forces. Ive tested it in both .44 and .357, and both failed.
If you cannot find XTP factory ammo, I would try Barnes or Norma. The Silver Tips from Winchester seem to be inconsistent with expansion IME

The American Eagle 158 JSP is an excellent load, and shoots exceptionally well in my guns.

Underwood 158gr XTP; should be doing ~1450ps from your 6":

357 mag carbine and revolver gel test: Underwood 158 gr XTP

https://www.underwoodammo.com/collections/handgun-ammo/products/357-magnum-158-grain-xtp-jacketed-hollow-point?variant=18785727021113

Based on Luckygunner's testing, the 158gr XTP performs well even at reduced impact velocity:

Hornady lists the G1 BC at .206. From this chart, we can see that the Underwood load is still exceeding the Luckygunner 2" performance out to 100yd:

I'm carrying some 158 grain Gold Dots over a nearly max load of 2400. Haven't been able to shoot a deer with it yet, but backyard penetration tests in water seem to indicate that it won't be a problem.

I've never shot a deer with a .357mag, but I do take one in case I get a good opportunity.

What do you guys think of this load, in a 4" Blackhawk, for shots no more than 40 yards?
(125gr Hornady XTP, in case you can't see the pic).

2" velocity shows what you could expect at 40-50yds impact velocity.

You can check out various .357 loads here; 2" offers a good idea of what the 40-50yd performance will be for most loads (except the short barrel loads.)

Happy to help.

I ran the number for you, it should actually do a bit better then the 2" results at 40yds; 2" is more like 60yds.

40yds is about a hot 9mm +P from a G34 at the muzzle, so still quite respectable.
