Sounds like a fairly normal flat wick lamp?

I have three and they are great for power outages.  I have them mounted on the wall on antique lamp holders.

They also make great mood lighting.

Wicks are readily available, I would recommend liquid paraffin for fuel. Burns super clean. We have both lamps and lanterns we bought from Lehmans years ago.  Also have the mason jar adapter we use around the patio with citronella oil.

This is an oil lamp.

The others are kerosene, whale oil, or camphor lamps.

Clear lamp oil or K1 kerosene for lamps used inside the house. I have a 5 gallon can of regular kerosene for lanterns used outdoors.

I have several Dietz hurricane lanterns that I use for a back-up light source.  They are amazing !   I have found that clear lamp oil gives more light output than liquid paraffin.

TJ has a really good article on oil lamps somewhere here on Arfcom

This might be the post you're thinking of:

Kerosene lamp discussion

I use Klean Heat, which is ridiculously expensive at around $10+ per gallon at Lowe's or Home Depot, but the amounts used in a lantern or lamp are minimal.  It's more refined than normal kerosene and burns with less odor--I think somewhere in the discussion above there's a note that if you light and extinguish the lamp outdoors, you can avoid most of the smell--once it's burning a few minutes the apparent odor is reduced.

I keep a few lamps on hand I bought from Vermont Lantern company. I get the lamp oil from Amazon, Lamplight I believe. Very clean burn with no smell.
