I'd like to know before I pop down $60 for the software.

For which modes is an interface is needed? had the 991A hooked up to use digital modes with just the usb cable and the free drivers.

5.24 was the last free HRD. You can get it here, and it still works fine (even for newer unsupported radios). This details how to get your 991 working with it.
