Woot 5-pack of BaoFeng UV-5R Dual Band Two Way Radios  Cost is $99.99 + $5 S/H

I can't speak for the quality of the radios, but I thought some of you might find it worthwhile.  Woot only sells an item for a day or until it's sold out, so decide 'soon' whether or not you want to buy it.

Woot is owned by Amazon - it used to be an independent reseller of clearance items.  They used to be a very good place for cheap one-of items left to buy.  I've bought from them in the past and have been happy with all of my purchases from them.

Can I not buy and use these on my hunting property without a ham license.

In to learn if these are worth it....
They look like a pain in the ass.
You have to program them with a computer???
You need a licence?
It would be nice to have a base station version so the wife could send out a signal that dinner was ready or zombies where at the gate.

I'm betting you won't learn much, since these have been disscussed to death already.

Sure, as long as you don't transmit.

I picked these up. I have an FCC license for maritime and I’ll go ahead and get my amateur along with some family members.

I used to do comms in the .mil so these should be fun. Looking forward to seeing what I can do with them and making some antennas too.

If you're looking to go cheap, pick up a 6-pack of BF-888s's.

For the money, they're surprisingly solid little radios.

Yes they have been,  and they are great radios for the price, and require a license to use, plus are far more complex than the FRS type radios.

In this months issue IIRC of QST magazine, the FCC and ARRL are discussing restrictions on the importation of these sorts of radios that are sold all over the place for little $$$.

Might be the time to get some.

I like the larger capacity batteries. They make the radio much easier to hold and use. They last forever on a charge too.

$20 a pop is a pretty good deal.  If you watch amazon you can usually find various versions pretty close to that, but rarely below it.

I was referring to the dual band rigs with a display.

I have a few 888 and they make a great 16 channel portable!

How about instead of bitching at him, either answer his questions or provide him links to all the previous threads you know about?

Without getting into all the technical aspects, these, or any handheld, will give you 1-2 miles tops between units. Even that is pushing it.
