I’m looking at a WoodMaxx FM-54 Flail Mower to mow a couple acres of tall grass around my place a few times a season. Anyone know anything about these?

Seems to be a good price for the features. If not this, any other recommendation?

They work great, typically mulch the material a bit better than a brush hog.

But they're significantly more maintenance prone and more expensive than a brush hog.

Any reason why you're looking at a flail mower over a brush hog?

I'm buying one for my excavator, but that's because brush hogs are pretty crappy on excavators.

seems like its light in the number of blades.
4 1/2 ft and only 18
I had a 6 ft it had approx 48.
Thats twice as many/ft.

Also height adjustment of 4" is pretty low.
I used mine mostly at 6-7"
I mowed "wild" areas with grasses/forbs.

I have about 3 acres I mow 2-4 times a season and it’s just doesn’t look good with my brush hog. It’s all grass, no sapplings and no brush.

I did notice that....

I’m also looking at the Betsco 41” model. It’s cheaper and heavier.

I started this one and didn’t get any responses for a while, so I posted in GD as well.

A flail mower will certainly give a better cut.  Mowing it more, would also help.

So if you have the money to try out on a flail mower, I would.  They're pretty neat attachments. Just as I said, beware of the maintenance. Having more blades, a rotating drum, ECT.  Means more maintenance

Sharpen or replace blades and drop down to a lower gear.

I'm not saying that is the OP's problem, but slowing down almost always gives a better finished product on brushhogging.
