1944-5 Germans civilians converted many of their cars and trucks to run on wood gas fumes.  They burnt wood and powered their cars that way.  It wasn't steam power but from the gases of the wood fumes.

How dey do dat?

I've no intention and don't have that type of skill, but I'm curious.

"Due to severe shortages of gasoline, many civilian vehicles in Europe and Japan were converted to operate on gases generated from coal or wood. The gases would be condensed to liquid form and fed to the carburetor. The condensed liquid hydrocarbons would form a fuel of relatively high volatility that would be sufficient to operate the gasoline engine. "

Someone will do it again, and I hope they burn coal.

I recall a reality show from some years back, a bunch of people were provided with a warehouse to live in, which they had to secure from marauders, etc. Basically a post-apocalyptical scenario. I don't recall the name of the show. They had a junkyard of stuff to use. In one episode, they built a wood gas fueled car and it worked. I'm sure there must be some YT vids on the topic.

I've a few spare XJs in the yard, that would be an interesting project, lots of room in the back for a wood furnace. IDK about stoking it while driving down the road. Perhaps wood pellets with a feeder would work.

Nut coal!

On the suggestion of U-toob, why didn't I think of it?

My Truck runs on "FIREWOOD".

IIRC the FEMA plans are very rudimentary. There are better options but after the crisis isn't the time to be building those so you have to decide now if you're just storing the knowledge now or if you want to build a relatively advanced gassifier and store that...

There is a prepper on YouTube that has a commercial gassifier that he runs a genset with. IIRC his channel is engineer775 but I can't be sure...

Thread derail: My step dad was in the navy when they were retiring their fleet of Chevy LUV trucks (the truck in the video). There were a lot of them on aircraft carriers and the like. Some had stupid low mileage. I think the lowest mileage one he purchased had three hundred something miles on it. The trucks were like 20 years old when he was buying them. He must have bought at least a dozen of them at $150-400. You could still get OEM parts at the dealership. He fixed them up and flipped them. His biggest struggle was convincing the buyers that the mileage was accurate, even with all of the documentation. They were neat little trucks and so clean it was like sitting in a time capsule.

Wood gassifiers. Look them up on youtube. Lots of plans and fun builds. One guy converted his lawnmower. I keep looking out for a cheap generator on CL to try converting. Looks like fun.

I remember that show, it was called The Colony.  One season the people were doing so poorly, they sent in a survival expert to teach them how not to die.

Saw a little steam powered skiff about 10 years ago.
Guy had a few 5 gal buckets of kindling.

BEST part was the steam whistle!

North Korea also uses wood and corn cobs as types of fuel.
