Looking at getting a 50 or 60hp outboard for out 18ft Lund. Will replace a mariner 40hp 2-stroke. Tiller first as we are trying to keep weight down. But must be electric start with pt&t. Trying to decide on zuk,yammi,merc or tohatsu. Going to be fun trying to find one in stock. Update. Found some but the prices for this year are making it a no-go on a new motor.

I can tell you the Merc 40 50 and 60s are made in China.
I do know that they run well and we have only one that had A catastrophic failure in out rental fleet. These engines Are beat like a rented mule though. If you go with the Merc Get the Command Thrust lower unit instead of the standard Gearcase. |

Thanks for the hint on the gearcase. |

The Command Thrust lower units (formerly known as "Bigfoot") are very robust.
Virtually every rental boat that goes out gets prop damage to one extent or another. Some are just dinged up on the edges and some have to be towed back because all the blades are gone! Using aluminum props help mitigate the impacts but gear and shaft failures due to impact are practically nil. We repair/replace severly damaged or broken gear case housings by just swapping the "guts" out of the damaged case into the new one and send it! |
