I am getting a Gheenoe and need to find a motor. The boat is rated for up to a 9.9 hp motor so I am looking in the 8 to 15 hp range. I am finding it pretty difficult to stomach the $2000 plus prices for a new four stroke so have instead started looking at used engines. What used outboards should I be looking at? So far what I've seen mentioned the most online is late 70s and up OMC Johnson 9.9s and 15s. Do you agree? What others should I look at?

Hard to beat Johnson/evenrude 15 with a 9.9 hood. Should be able to snag one for 4-600 bucks

I have a 1994 Johnson 25 and a 1999 Mercury 9.9 on my fishing boat. My cousin has 1994 Johnson 25 & 9.9, my buddy has 1995 Mercury 15 & 25. All freshwater use. All two strokes.
The small tiller steer Mercurys are better for fishing - at least with our typical trolling/jigging techniques. Shift and throttle on the twist handle is sweet and the tilt lock is also one handed. The Johnsons just run. Change the lube and plugs and they are good to go. I did my first water pump impellor last year. The Mercury's need more maintenance. Lower unit seals, carb rebuilds, ignition parts, reed valves. Even when they are freshly tuned they are finicky with cold starts. I still like the Merc better for fishing. |

Yamaha or Mercury for small 4-strokes. Nothing wrong with Johnson or Evinrude
small 2-strokes except they are getting old at this point. No matter which you choose, if you buy used, have it checked out by a qualified tech/shop. ETA - I wouldn't even consider a used outboard that has been in salt water no matter how well it was flushed after use. Salt water is the debbil. |

Thanks a lot for the info guys. Seems like in the two stroke world the johnson/omc and merc are the way to go. I will heed kb7dx's advice should I wind up going the four stroke route.

Suzuki makes a good outboard.
But like any make the dealer and its mechanics are number one. |

Don't discount a rippin steal on an ethanol fukt non runner with spark and compression. A simple carb cleaning, new plug and fresh premix will usually bring them back to life if they have a strong spark and good compression.

Can't go wrong with a Tohatsu. I got lucky and found a used one local to me. $600 for a 4hp. Replaced the carb with the 6hp model.

I am frugal in all things. I have had good luck with OMC and Merc small outboards from CL and FB marketplace. I have also had some that needed a few things, but none so bad that a $100 wouldn't fix it. These were all 2 strokes in the 2-10hp range. This is popular here as anything over 10hp is titled. My favorite and most frugal purchase was an Evinrude lightwin 4hp 1965 vintage that I paid $50 for. I hosed the carb with cleaner, replaced a fuel line for about $1 and ran the thing all summer on a 12' dinghy.

Got a 2 hp Evinrude.
For free. Told it had a carb issue. Tested, no spark. Attached File Coil had lead siliconed in. Found a NOS Mallory on eBay for $19. Attached File Fired up on second pull. Ran smooth. Fuel spewing out carb. Rapped on it a few times, figuring needle or float stuck, no joy. $11 eBay carb kit. Pull carb, one of the sides that hold the float pin had been broken and " glued" back in. Failed so float and needle got jacked up/ cocked. Used PC 7 epoxy, pin permanent now. Attached File Shaved down to clear, reassembled. Second pull today. Attached File Ordered impeller. |

I see this thread is a month old, but in the event you haven't found a motor yet....
When I was in the market (for 150HP), I was better off buying a boat/motor/trailer (for $2K), removing the motor, and selling the hull/trailer (for $1K). Just something to consider, don't limit your options to looking for a motor only. |

I am still looking but need to find something by middle/end of March. If I can't find a good used motor I am thinking about going with a suzuki 9.9 with election start and tilt. It's pricey but it seems like the electric tilt would be nice to have for use in shallow waters. Is the suzuki a good engjne? I've heard it's efi vs carb'd which is a good thing but I am not sure how true that is. |

Suzukis are fine. Make sure the dealer is GTG .

An acquaintance has one of these which hasn't been run in like 10 years. I know it's an older motor and likely would require some work to get going. Is it worth looking into? Were these good outboards?
It looks like this one but in much rougher shape. Mid 80's Honda 100 10 hp |

I going to look at a great condition yamaha short shaft 9.9 2017 4 stroke. The seller says it is in excellent condition with less than 100 hours and no problems. He wants $1000. That seems like a pretty good deal. Are these good motors? Any reason I should avoid it?

They are great outboards. So much so that Mercury's offerings in that HP range are copies
of the Yamaha design. |

If I buy a New 4 stroke it will be a Honda or Yamaha and probably just affirm it if I don't have the cash. My 9.9 Mercury is a little disappointing but it is quiet. I just wish it had electric start. But I didn't get hurt buying the boat trailer and motor all a year old for $2,700.00. Now I just need to start a small bass boat project.
