https://www.ar15.com/forums/armory/Wearable-Antennas/10-508835/

Intent is to maximize performance of the Baofeng UV-5R while wearing body armor.

The above thread was archived so I was unable to respond to it, however my question is it better to use a wearable antenna such as the CAATailAntenna ( https://caatailantennas.com/products/baofeng-wearable-antenna-package ) or Disco32 ( https://disco32.com/products/vest-mounted-antenna-system?variant=31121884381293 ) or to use an antenna such as the Nagoya 771 (woven through the back panel molle https://www.amazon.com/Authentic-NA-771-15-6-Inch-SMA-Female-BTECH/dp/B00KC4PWQQ/ ) on an extended cable ( https://www.amazon.com/Nisaea-Extension-Connector-Connecting-Bulkhead/dp/B07FLW4ZXB/ )

Option 1 is roughly $50 , option 2 is roughly $28. Cost isn't really an issue more so than performance. Opinions and real world experience is greatly appreciated!

Compared to the 771 that has pretty bad reviews.  However I'm not opposed to a whip style antenna.

So does anyone know how well an antenna works when folded on itself?

No so good...

Also, if you have plates in your carrier, and they are steel, they are affecting your antenna.

I suggest a small backpack with your radio and antenna there, with an lapel mic and earpiece going under your hearing protection.

I like a tape antenna with a gooseneck mount.
You can have multiple antennas for your radio(s), I think everyone should.  I suggest you get something short, something long, and something useful.

You could get that cattail (which is cool I think) and snake it through your kit and leave it there, just connect it when you want you use it and otherwise you're free to use whatever antenna you want.

Nagoya NA-24j works great for me in this role. More flexible than the 771.

I keep hearing that the vest mounted wire type don't always work well, and relocating with cable cam create issues too

This was big back in the '80s. With a metal hardhat, it was very effective.

I've personally tried flexible antennas made from the inner core of coax woven thru body armor over in Afghanistan and the result were poor. They work okay for inter team comms when you're never more than a couple hundred meters away, but for longer hauls you really need an external antenna with height and clearance.

who are you planning on talking to with this radio and antenna and how far away will they be?

If within a few hundred yards  or even 1/2 mile, the antenna will not make any difference it will work fine given no terrain obstacles.

To make any appreciable difference you will need to get the antenna up and away from your body.

I want one of those!

I may convert an old climbing helmet I have and go to the next hamfest wearing that once this corona shit goes away and there are hamfests again.

You're not truly "Ham-Sexy" until you can rock the 70cm 4-element quad beam on your hardhat.

The signal stuff antenna works pretty well, and can be coiled up when not in use. I imagine it could be weaved into gear easier than the nagoya antenna.
You also support hamstudy.org when you buy one, keeping it free for everyone.

Probably the other best thing is to get a better radio.

I agree with this. That would make the biggest difference.

The reviews I've seen if the abbree antennas almost all have them working better then the 771 the only ones i saw that didn't were the knockoffs sold as abbrees.
