In this thread  some of us were discussing an arfcom net on 3.898 Mhz.
Time we are going to try it is 0130Z wednesday morning. (9:30pm EDT tuesday)   If you aren't on eastern time do your own conversion.
Everyone is welcome to join in.  Several of us in Indiana have been on 80 meters several times in the last few weeks.  This time of evening should give pretty good regional coverage.
If 3.898 is busy we will try to get close to that freq.   If we are far off we can post here.
We came up with 3 simple rules that must be followed on this net.(every net needs rules)

1. have fun
2. maybe learn something
3.refer to rule 1

You need a Preamble.

Let me dig one up for you.

And you can say, "... this net meets on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights at 01:30 UTC on or about 3.998 mhz..."
Link Posted: 10/4/2010 9:20:28 PM EDT
[#2]
This is a very generic preamble and script, alter as needed:

Is this frequency in use?  (pause to listen)  Is this frequency in use?  (pause to listen)

Hearing nothing...

CQ, CQ, CQ, This is (YOUR CALL) calling the (YOUR NET NAME) net. This is (YOUR CALL), my name is (YOUR NAME), and I am located in (YOUR CITY/STATE).

The (YOUR NET NAME) net meets each (STATE DAYS AND TIMES, both UTC and local time) on or about 3.898 Mhz.  This net is an informal round table discussion concerning matters of interest to the members of the (YOUR NET NAME).

When checking into the net, please give your call sign, name, and location. After taking checkins, I will open up the net for any announcements, comments, questions or discussions that anyone may have. All amateurs are welcome to join the net.

––––-

"Is there any emergency or other time sensitive traffic for the net?  If so, please call now."

(pause to listen)

"Is there any Health & Welfare traffic for the net?  If so, please call now."

(pause to listen)

"Are there any QST's or announcements for the net?  If so, please call now."

(pause to listen)

"Are there any QRP or mobile stations that may soon be out of range that would like to check in?  Any station may relay.  If you are a QRP or mobile station that would like to check in, please call now."

(pause to listen)

"Now taking general checkins.  If you would like to check in, please call now."

or

"Any checkins for the (YOUR NET NAME) net, please call now."

––––

"Since there are no additional checkins, at this time I will open the net for general ragchew."

––––

Is there any further business for the net before I close?

Hearing nothing, this is (YOUR CALL) closing tonight's session of the (YOUR NET NAME) net. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the net and those who stood by during the net. The (YOUR NET NAME) net will return next (TIME AND DATE). This is (YOUR CALL) returning the frequency to general amateur use. 73.

I'm in another 80 meter net now that has checkins from all over the continental USA.  no Alaska or Hawaii on tonight.

Some think that you can't work nationwide on 80.  Tonight I worked CA, TX, MS, MA, CT and many in between.   Still some static but it is dropping.  In the next few weeks things should get even better.
So give it a try tomorrow if you can.

Anybody consider that a digital mode like Olivia would likely expand the area over which stations can be heard?

I gotta imagine 80 meter Olivia would allow pretty much anyone in the US to check in.

Just a thought,,,

I think Olivia would be Ok, except for the newbies, It would leave some of them out

Time for an "ARFCOM HOW TO OLIVIA" thread?

We all have computers, but i'm guessing not all of us have the capability for computer rig control.

Maybe a separate Olivia net after the voice net?

I'd be interested in learning about using Olivia and any digital mode Arfcom net.  Hell, I just got my feet wet with PSK31!

I'm sure you don't mean "rig control" since it's a luxury not a necessity. Just sayin'.

Well.. quite true. I should have worded that differently. I started out with PSK via holding the mic to the speaker, and vice-versa.

So, is this on for tonight?  I'll give it a try from SE NM.  Don't know if 100W into a wet spiderweb will do it, but I'll try!

This may sound dumb, but is a 40 meter dipole workable on 80 meters without a tuner?  a half-wave dipole would be a quarter wave on 80 right?  Or am I totally off base?

Try it. Only one way to find out.

ETA: 3.898 sounds pretty busy right now. lots of nearby traffic.

Strong signal on 3.897.

You know, Bill, that radio works indoors, too.  It's a lot more comfy inside in your underwear than outside in 40*F freezing your nurples off!

I'd be in if I didn't have S9+ noise. I can tune up on 80 and even have a KW, but I can't hear shit due to QRM.

However if there's a digi or CW net, I'd be all over it. Anybody interested in doing PSK or CW after the voice net?

not sure how long i'll be around afterwards, but if anyone wants to try, I'm monitoring now. Name a freq and mode.

I actually made out your call pretty well considering band conditions at my QTH.

Everyone must be up Indiana way as I don't even hear one station over the rest.

Pretty impressive net tonight, relatively speaking. In other words it was marginal but that's a big improvement over what we've had this summer, which is nothing!

Keith (KA9xxx) was booming into my location (KB1xxx) at S9 and completely readable. I could also hear WOxx, W4xxx and WA8xx all S7 and readable with difficulty.

I'm running an IC7000 through an SG239 into a Cobra Ultralite Senior at 25ft.

FB all!

Most came in pretty well. Net control is 10 over.

Dang, I could hear NC about 3X9 for a while,  but DSP isn't much help - there is another QSO on the freq, at least one of them a 7 call.  Probably 'til I get moved and put up a real antenna I'm not gonna get out of 5 land anywhere lower than 40M.  But I'll try again next time!
