 Elephant damage. They push trees over to eat the upper leaves. Sometimes they push them over just for the fun of it.  Elephants strip the bark off of trees and eat it. It kills the trees.  Bird hunting where there are no limits or seasons. The local kids will work as beaters and retrievers for some pocket change. Shotgun shells in some parts of Africa are sometimes substandard. Expect a dud now and then. |

Well the idea was born way back in highschool in the late 60's and started from reading African pieces in gun and hunting mags like Sports Afield. The plan started quite simply as somehow getting to hunt in Africa before my time on this planet was up. Kudu were the favorite dream animal of a lot of thoes articles. So that was sort if in the plan somewhere. Then all the Capstick books came out. After reading Death in the Long Grass the first time I formed a solid plan. Hunt cape buffalo before my 40th birthday. So honestly Fish, there was only one thing on my "to do" list. Kill a cape buffalo.
It took years to save the money for that first Zimbabwe dangerous game hunt with Roger Whittall's safari outfit. But it somehow came together and three days after killing a buffalo I told the PH that it was my birthday and to please excuse me for getting drunk around the campfire that night. God willing there will be lots of other African animals but the "to do" list was finished fifteen years ago. For you folks that are contemplating an African safari be warned that part of your soul stays in Africa after that first hunt and you are never quit at peace again after that. You will find yourself constantly thinking of how to get back there. |

This is going to be the last one. It has been a pleasure sharing the photos with you all. Hope you enjoyed looking at them as much as I enjoyed sharing them with you.
  The elusive Bushbuck. They stick to thick riverine cover and are only active in the evening and early morning. They are also solitary animals. The Bushbuck is not a very commonly sighted African animal which is probably a good thing since they are reported to be extremely aggressive especially when wounded. It is hard to imagine the small spotted Bambi looking creature charging a hunter with the intent to gore him to death but it has happened. These two came along quietly. |

Africa will do that to you. I went back for a few weeks in 2008. I'm overdue for a re-charge. I sure do miss it.

Great memories. And it is true, once you go you always want to go back. I hunted all around the Ellisras/Lephalale area in 2007, the Free State and Eastern Cape in 2009. Due for another trip, hopefully next year.
