Pretty sure it is a garter but they come in so many variations. |

it's an eastern garter snake. Good thing your son was wearing gloves, garters use a nasty musk smell as a defense mechanism. Never bothered me when I was a kid, I had dozens of them. They eat frogs, worms, slugs... that sort of stuff. Harmless.
