Clever but the Morse code part makes zero sense. Why the heck would a door lock use Morse code? Just think about it.

True.
But his ear was listening to and remembering the the tones being generated by the key pad. And his code training probably helped to differentiate the tones. I just thought that it was interesting. Like the old pagers being held up to a phone and being played to dial the call. |

I assume they are talking about the tones the electronic door's keypad makes when you enter the passcode.

The keypad for the exit at a place where a relative is (that has two floors of dementia/Alzheimer's patients), does indeed produce DTMF tones. The exterior doors have them, and so does the elevator controls. I found that odd, but not much thought about it before now.
