I just got back from 3 days in SW Kansas, hunting private land. There were a TON of birds, more than I've ever seen. We got into pheasant every day, and in most of the fields we tried. We didn't really hunt for quail, but got a few blues and bobs here and there. I got 9 roosters and 6 or so quail, our group totaled 29 roosters and roughly 20 quail. The temperatures were VERY mild, 20/30s to 50s/60s.

This was the best upland hunt of my life!

Many years ago I went on my first pheasant hunt around Garden City. My dad knew someone who had a lot of land there, and they knew people where we could hunt if we wanted. The first batch of pheasants we ran into came up all around me. I could have reached out and hit a couple of them. I'll never forget about 200 pheasants coming up at one time. The sound was unique. That's the only time I've ever seen that many at one time. My dad got 3 of them out of that. With a double barrel 20.

I wish I was closer. Glad to see the birds have good population. A few more years of we summers and low crop prices and we might see some bird populations back to what they were in the late 80's to mid 90's.

Apparently they had a bad hail storm in the spring of 18 that really knocked the population back on everything. Last year we killed 1 rooster and one bobwhite quail in 4 days.
