Totally and absolutely unimpressed with Remington's 783.  Remington's "flagship" rifle, the 700, has been shit for a few years (not of the quality that made the Remington 700 the renown rifle it was).  Remington's "budget" rifles, the 783, the 770, etc are worse

I'll take the the Ruger thank you.  Yes, it is a budget rifle, but Ruger's budget American consistently outperforms so called 'premium' offerings like the 700, and certainly the 783

I have the ruger American.  Seems like a decent gun, very accurate for sure.  Kind of cheaply made, but it was cheap.

What are you hunting?  I have dropped a lot of elk with both calibers.  The -06 is a legendary caliber of course, but the .308 will get it done easily.

I would have no interest in any Remington products made in the last 20 years. While the Ruger is a “cheap” gun at least its solid. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a case of a bad Ruger that wasn’t just a complete factory screw up and easily fixed by a phone call and a shipping label.

I'll be hunting deer and hogs.
Got these in trades and both are in the safe.
The rifle I chose will join AR's in 6.5 Grendel and 450 Bushmaster.

I don’t know how what AR’s you have matter at all to the equation.

But you don’t have an AR in 5.56? Anyway, I digress...

The Ruger is the way to go almost regardless of caliber. It’s simply a better rifle. In that price class, I’d take a Ruger American and a T/C Compass over all of the rest of the competitors.

If the 06 was a Remington 700 I would say go with that one, but it's not so definitely go with the Ruger.

Yeah, if maybe it was an older Rem. 700, like those built in the 80s-90s, I'd say go for it due to their better Q.C. back then as well as all the aftermarket support for 700s.

But given the OP's stated choices, I'd agree the Ruger is the better choice.

I have one of the 783’s and, while it’s okay, if I had to do it over again I would probably go the Ruger route. I’m just too tied to the Remington at this point to let it go. It was my first bolt action I bought on my own. I then found out mine wasn’t as “free floated” as they claim from the factory, so I had to take sandpaper to the barrel channel to prevent the contact I was getting. A few years later, I worked for a custom bolt gun builder for awhile, so I had my buddy do a duracoat job on the stock for a case of beer. So now my $200 30-06 has the paint job of a $6,000 rifle to its credit, the same buddy put it on the trigger pull gauge and he said the trigger of my 783 was more consistent pull-to-pull than any of the stock 700 triggers he had seen.
