You should try one to see how good/bad it really is.

Could be a good data point.

I saw recently on their site that they are now retroactively saying everything is good for 30 years, despite what the "best by date" on the packaging may indicate...See here.

From the site:

30 Year Shelf Life*

Based on our ongoing sensory and nutrition testing of actual Mountain House products, in July 2016, we raised the shelf-life on our Mountain House meals to 30 years. Purchased Mountain House before then? That’s okay! Our Taste Guarantee is retroactive to products dating all the way back to 1986.

We confidently claim a 30-year shelf life, because our testing has shown the shelf life exceeds 30 years. We’ve had independent studies performed on actual 30-year-old product stored under real-world conditions, which weren’t always ideal – not on newer product exposed to an accelerated –time environment in a laboratory. We’ve personally tasted products that were 35 years old and still taste great!

Take Mountain House with you on your next outdoor adventure or store just in case that next storm knocks your power out.

*Ice Cream products have a 2-year shelf life. MCWs (previously known as LRPs) have a 3-year shelf life.

As long as the integrity of the packaging has not been compromised (tears, pinholes, etc) , they're gonna be just fine.

Fuck it. Keep on eating them for lunch. Or donate them for anyone doing a drive for flood victims  maybe.

That's really not a bad idea.

There's a church around here that's right outside the US Army Mountain Warfare School; they have a thrift shop that's open occasionally. The military donates insane amounts of MRE-type food and stuff a few times a year and the church sells it for cheap, hopefully to those who need it and not just Joe Camper. Most meals are rather obscure things like First Strike Rations or the winter/white pack ones. When I'm there and I see someone intrigued by those rations, I encourage them to give it a try. I've sampled more than my fair share of the issue ones (not by choice!) and would encourage anyone to do so as well, especially if it's a person who needs alternate food sources due to economic or disaster reasons.

Send them my way. I'll pay shipping and let you know how they taste.

Stop being a wimp eat them.

Ill trade you a vintage 1991ish pack of MRE crackers for a pouch of food

apparently you don't ever watch the steve1989 videos on youtube

I would feel fine eating them another 10 years from now but that's just me. If you had a whole bunch and just wanted them gone I too would be willing to pay shipping for them.

I still say keep em or give em to people who are going through shtf right now in the midwest before you just give them over to someone else to just put in a closet. Either they are your preps or they are some family's breakfast, lunch and dinner next week.

Freeze dried foods kept sealed and in a climate controlled environment will last decades.

If you get rid of them you are throwing away money.

I'd be up for doing the same if you've got very much and want to split it up.

I have a bunch of the pouches I bought more than 10 years ago. Still eating them occasionally. Just as good now as then.

Nobody knows how long freeze dried foods will last if properly maintained. It's only been invented for 70 years.

I will take any you want to get rid of...

I have cans nearing 30 years and I have no concern about using them if needed for many more years. If anything, keep them for charity giving if a situation arises.

Hey Die,  no worries brother. I recently ate some macaroni and cheese and beef stew out of pouches from 2005 they were just as yummy as when new. I wouldn't suggest giving them to charity or food bank they go strictly by any dates that are on products and if it's past that they throw it away.

Hell, I eat canned soups from 2008 with no problems.

MH is good for ~30 years.

But hey if you want to waste money, send them my way.

You could always use them to give to people who keep bugging you for food and wont go away... Kind of a hey, here go away.

Recently had some pouches with best by of 09/2010 (beef stew and chicken teriyaki).

Still tasted great.

Edit: They were not climate controlled other than not exposed to sun and not over 100 degrees.

Long story short I found and ate a pouch of MH chicken and rice 7 years after I bought it. Good to go.
