Very proud of this young man. He has been shooting regularly since he has been 4, as well as his brother. (Little shits go through my .22 stockpile like you wouldn't believe!)
He loves Legos, so this summer I ordered him a PSA "Deerhunter15" lower and 16" 300BO upper and we assembled togather piece by piece. I let him assist me in handload development using TCM powder and of course Barnes 110gr Black tips. He made a perfect heart/lung shot at 100 yards. Bear only walked 10 feet. The blood "trail" was amazing. It looked like this thing was hit by a sharpened meat auger. Here he is with his bear and my father (his geandfather) who guided him on the hunt. Attached File |

View Quote For a very young hunter I found this to me an ideal cartridge at ranges he is capable of at game he will be shooting He is shooting from a rest, and at his age I wanted the most lethality from the least recoil possible. It's a heavier profile barrel with a Brake on the end. Very very light recoil impulse. Alot of my peers had purchased/built AR pistols in 5.56/300BO and one buddy with a .277 wolverine that's quite impressive But for a very young shooter, they are a bit more jumpy, alot more blast, and lost precious velocity where hunting is concerned. I find from 6-12 years old AR platform guns are the best, as the adjustability of the platform with light recoil make then ideal if not the best for this age where "youth" guns are a bit too large yet. Shooting my handload the 110 Barnes is moving 2540 from the muzzle. Its sighted about an inch high at 100 yards, making anything out to 200 yards a dead hold. Based on the massive internal damage and absolutely ridiculous blood trail I would have no issues with him shooting a whitetail 200 yards away from a rock steady rest. |

That is awesome. You are doing the whole dad thing right!!
I had the pleasure of being with my oldest son this past fall when he finally connected on his first whitetail. It is something I will NEVER forget. Hopefully, my younger son will follow suit this year. |

Do you hunt with dogs or bait? That stuff is illegal in NY so bears are usually killed basically in muggings where they stumble across deer hunters.
