Does anyone have any experience with planting natural mosquito repelling plants in sandy soils? Does anything help, or do I just resort to chemical warfare ?

If such a thing existed, you wouldn't have to come here to find out about it.

Agreed. Seems like some may help a little but not much.

If this is allowed it supposedly works pretty well.

We have tried natural plants but there are just way to many skeeters.

I think people write those articles because they have a quota to meet and don't have anything else to write about.

Thermacell, Picaridin, DEET, spray the yard, or stay inside.

I tried the Spartan tubes two years ago (I typed last year, but remembered I lost most of last year to covid, so holy crap...it's been two years.)

The key is getting them out before the mosquitos get going.  Not saying they don't help anyway, but I was late and it's very difficult to tell whether they did any real good or not.

I'm interested in what others experience with them. I might try them again.

I was going to install these as a service as part of my business, but I couldn't swear by them so I never did.

I hate to use chemical warfare cuz it kills the good bugs too, but we are at a point where we have to take action.  Uxb cannot even walk out the door, covered in DEET, without getting eaten.

Only so much we can do with so much water in Rural AK.

I have a propane fogger.  It's the WMD of mosquito control.

Eta: Not "control" so much, but it will clear a large area for the day.

The fungus based mosquito bits type treatment works if you have standing water or something nearby.   But its expensive.

It is the best way to apply the chems.

Are you putting out bifenthrin?

I wrapped most of the screen with a piece of aluminum foil to keep the heat in and block the wind.  It works much better.  Let it sit and get good and hot.

I use a Stihl 430 backpack sprayer and alternate chemical’s between Talstar P and CY Kick CS

I treat about 5 acres, works great on ticks, mosquitoes and anything else that bites and stings

Same here.  My original fogger was a pump-up sprayer that I fed the nozzle into a leaf blower.  Homebrew rig, but it worked pretty well.

Upgraded to the Stihl 430.  I spray Bifenhrnin 7.9%, diluted 1oz per gallon.

Not sure how deep the woods are, but with the motor powered sprayer/fogger I use I can get the chemicals to drift a few hundred feet into the woods, further if the wind is right.

Bifenthrin. Figure out where you are having the most issues. Mix up your spray. Bifenthrin is highly toxic to mosquitoes so it doesn’t have to be too strong. Wait till the hottest part of the day. Spray on the underside of the leaves and brush. That’s where they are gathered. You’ll have to spray in an upward manner to get them. A powered sprayer works better than a pump up. I use my tow behind sprayer 12 volt powered.

I have spent thousands on plants, smoke foggers, UV attraction 300' from the house, and chemicals.

Only method works with guaranteed success. Chemicals. Takes care of wasps, ticks, and every other insect that are issues.

I am in heavily wooded area of East-Central MN. Surrounded by mosquito breeding grounds (ponds and swamp).

I’ve had good luck with spraying right at dusk on a calm day. If there is a gentle breeze, it will really carry the spray/mist.  If I’m trying to get it to drift better i adjust the nozzle to get a really fine mist which seems to help.

We used the mosquito tubes for a few years and those were ok, but didn’t help with ticks, then hired a guy for a summer to spray. Finally realized the powered sprayer would pay for itself in a season over hiring someone or buying multiple chemicals/devices for different insects

The first couple year I paid for a service to come out and do it. It was $275 each time. 2 treatments paid for the blower/fogger and all of the chemicals.

Atta boy!

Now order the good stuff. 1oz per gallon of each does the trick.

https://diypestcontrol.com/proflex or https://diypestcontrol.com/82690036 (They are effectively the same)

&

https://diypestcontrol.com/exciter-insecticide-exciter-pyrethrin

You can mix the two together in the same tank.

And

I'm calling it. We are swimming in skeeters here. I put them up ahead of emergence, put up MORE than recommended, and they did somewhere between Jack and Shit.

So for MN north woods skeeters, total bust.

Damn.

How much standing water do you have in your area?

In my area pretty much all anti-skeeter stuff is like pissing into the wind. Just too much water.
