Does anyone have any experience with planting natural mosquito repelling plants in sandy soils? Does anything help, or do I just resort to chemical warfare ?

If such a thing existed, you wouldn't have to come here to find out about it.

MOSQUITO CONTROL THAT WORKS, #1 Best Method |

If this is allowed it supposedly works pretty well.
https://spartanmosquito.com/ We have tried natural plants but there are just way to many skeeters. |

View Quote I tried the Spartan tubes two years ago (I typed last year, but remembered I lost most of last year to covid, so holy crap...it's been two years.) The key is getting them out before the mosquitos get going. Not saying they don't help anyway, but I was late and it's very difficult to tell whether they did any real good or not. I'm interested in what others experience with them. I might try them again. I was going to install these as a service as part of my business, but I couldn't swear by them so I never did. I hate to use chemical warfare cuz it kills the good bugs too, but we are at a point where we have to take action. Uxb cannot even walk out the door, covered in DEET, without getting eaten. |

I have a propane fogger. It's the WMD of mosquito control.
Eta: Not "control" so much, but it will clear a large area for the day. |

The fungus based mosquito bits type treatment works if you have standing water or something nearby. But its expensive.

You can fix anything, so even if the engine or pump is bad, that wouldn't stop you. Be aware, fogging is also very hard on beneficials. So your timing is key. |

My original fogger was a pump-up sprayer that I fed the nozzle into a leaf blower. Homebrew rig, but it worked pretty well. Upgraded to the Stihl 430. I spray Bifenhrnin 7.9%, diluted 1oz per gallon. |

Bifenthrin. Figure out where you are having the most issues. Mix up your spray. Bifenthrin is highly toxic to mosquitoes so it doesn’t have to be too strong. Wait till the hottest part of the day. Spray on the underside of the leaves and brush. That’s where they are gathered. You’ll have to spray in an upward manner to get them. A powered sprayer works better than a pump up. I use my tow behind sprayer 12 volt powered.

I have spent thousands on plants, smoke foggers, UV attraction 300' from the house, and chemicals.
Only method works with guaranteed success. Chemicals. Takes care of wasps, ticks, and every other insect that are issues. I am in heavily wooded area of East-Central MN. Surrounded by mosquito breeding grounds (ponds and swamp). https://diypestcontrol.com/ |

Quoted: Wow, much further than I thought!!! That would go far enough. View Quote I’ve had good luck with spraying right at dusk on a calm day. If there is a gentle breeze, it will really carry the spray/mist. If I’m trying to get it to drift better i adjust the nozzle to get a really fine mist which seems to help. We used the mosquito tubes for a few years and those were ok, but didn’t help with ticks, then hired a guy for a summer to spray. Finally realized the powered sprayer would pay for itself in a season over hiring someone or buying multiple chemicals/devices for different insects |

View Quote @Rat_Patrol In addition to this, if you get a battery backpack sprayer (I recommend Flowzone because I have experience with those) you have serious firepower as far as shooting about 70 feet, so up in the trees, THROUGH some vegetation, over vegetation to rain down on it, etc. |

This is day 3? since spraying.
World Of Difference There is a skeeter here and there, but you can easily sit outside in comfort. At night thy skeeters come in, from deeper in the woods I presume, but we have the daytime back at least. The little Propane Fogger helped a tiny bit. This gets shit done. Bonus are dead spiders, hornets, ticks. Get a blower mister, get this spray, get rid of bugs. I spent years trying every natural approach, nothing worked to any measurable degree. This works. |
|
Yep. took me two years to figure it out.
Buy the atomizer, buy the chemicals. live happy. Keep your grass cut short, skeeters live in the grass. |
