Would you trust 15 year old MRE's that have been safely stored in your home? I have cases of them in case of an emergency last resort.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT Sorry, I didn't pay attention that this wasn't in GD.  I am sure someone that actually has some relevant information will come along shortly to answer your question.

Yes as long as they pass the look and smell test.

You'll find that individual components will not have aged well, and appearance and taste is probably affected for main entrees. Unless there are obvious signs of packaging degradation, you should be fine.

I had several cases of the 1980’s kind. The cheese spread had turned color and the John Wayne bar turned to rock.  Everything else was fine

each item will be different

I opened a lot of my old ones when I moved, I didn't find any that were "bad"  but some of them I wouldn't eat.
From what I remember the apple sauce was brown/chunky, the cheese had separated/turned brown, PB seperated, most of the entrees were darker but none of them had any smells or off tastes.

I've eaten 10 year old MREs.  The old brown style, I got them in 95 and are them in 2005.
The applesauce was like fruit leather.  The entrees were fine.  Some had a peanut candy bar, the peanuts had turned rancid and were inedible.  The Tootsie rolls were fine.

I tried out some 9 year  old mashed potatoes and peanut butter last night.

Peanut butter tasted good.  The potatoes would probably have been better hot.

Open a few and try them out.

MREs are still available more or less new.

Figure out a way to eat them slowly to get rid of them (camping or whatever) and get new ones.

I'd at least try one then decide.

This^

I wouldn’t plan like they are my long term food storage but they are still usable.

I wouldn't call myself an expert but I have eaten some really old ones on deployment

If the packaging of the items inside has what appears to be a thin layer of clear plastic falling off, whatever is inside will be pretty bad in my experience.  Potentially rancid nuts, black wheat snack bread, separated cheese spread (orange oil and congealed yellow shit) etc.  Then again, might be fine, only one way to tell

How desperate are you?

Where does it say you need to eat 15-year-old anything?

Did you lose a bet?

I'll never understand why people put things in their mouths just to prove that they are "brave" (stupid) enough to do it.

I've seen Bear Grylls squish poo-juice out of dung balls and swallow it. I hope the paycheck was worth it.

Reread the original post. Last resort emergency food.

I have a bunch of it that I saved for a SHTF situation. It would cost a small fortune to replace what I have stashed.

I have 20 or 30 that have been stored in a hot garage in Phoenix for the past 15 years.

I ate the last of my brown bag MREs around the 2005 time frame.

They were fine.

About 4 years ago I split a C-RAT pound cake with a guy who had saved it from 1967.

As said, they might be fine. I would work on eating them gradually and replace them slowly. Or not.

Might invest in mountain house number 10 cans next time.
