Why is the LIfePO (bioenno)  battery more commonly used in portable ham community over the LiPo which seems to be a cheaper option?

I know nothing of batteries but would like to get one for my FT891 so I could start doing POTA. Watching my pennies so would like a good cost effective option.

Please Arfcom Elmers enlighten me!

LIfePO is generally safer and has a better cell voltage that jives better with ham radio equipment. A fully charged cell is around 3.6v. With 4 in series thats 14.4v which is within tolerance of 12v ham equipment. The discharged voltage is 2-2.5v per cell which is 8-10v in a 4 cell series configuration.

LIPO is 4.2v charged which would be 16.8v in 4 series. Discharged 3.0v so 12.0v in series. Just not as good as a compatible range even in a 3 cell series configuration.

Main advantage of LiFePO4 is the 3.3V nominal cell voltage x4 cells gets you to around 14V total when fully charged, which is toward the top end of the desirable range for most radio gear.  They also tend to have more charge cycles before cells begin to degrade.  Downside compared to Li-ion will mainly be cost.

Also, typically li-ion will have an 80% capacity for 300-500 with better ones up to 1000 cycles. LiFePO4 generally have 2000-4000 cycle 80% lives. LiFePO4 can be slightly lighter than li-ion mainly due to packaging.

For radios like the FT-817 that can tolerate lower voltages a 3S LiPo can work great and be very cost effective. I used Zippy 5000mah RC batteries and never had any problems with them. They need a little extra care than LiFePo's,  but not a big deal.

For ~$20 you can build a 300w dc-dc converter to step a 4S lipo pack down to 13.8. A number of our club members have built them. The boards are all over amazon and you just need to add an enclosure and pigtails.

Lithium polymer is way lighter than either.

Actually its even simpler. You can just use a silicon (IIRC) diode it will actually drop the voltage enough (1.x V) to prevent overvolting most Ham radios off a fully charged 4S lipo pack.
