And so it begins. Off to my annual bird trip to the Sunflower State. Stop over in Columbia MO to link up with my NC hunting partner, then an easy 5 hour drive to Clay Center Monday. Then it’s all about the birds, the dog, and the booze until Friday.

Got into a few coveys today.  Bigguns; maybe 25 i the first and 10-12 in the second.

I managed to knock down 2, with the help of Blaze...

Little better today. Total take 8 roosters and 3 quail, my part was 4 roosters and 1 quail.

Cold as hell today, think the high was 33. 18 when we got out on the first push.

Tough day today.  Busted 3 coveys and a few roosters, but they got the best of me.  Partner got a single quail.  Looks like it's pizza for supper!

Are those wild birds you just walk up on?

Edit: as always, great pictures and video. Thanks for sharing!

We do walk up on wild birds, but that video is from a game farm. I will say the birds they put are the closest to wild birds I’ve ever seen.

All the quail are wild. The key to success is the dog, and Blaze has got the nose for birds.

Glad you enjoyed your time in our state! I’m out pheasant hunting in western Kansas right now. All public land, all wild birds.

Back home. Brutal drive.

But here’s a 12 shot frame grab sequence showing just how fast things happen. This represents about 1.5 seconds of real-time.

Here’s a little memento I like to make for my hunting partners.

Super easy, hammer out the primer, hot glue to hold the tail and thong in place, and some beads to finish

Great thread!!!!

We head from StL to KS on Dec 13 for waterfowl.

You drove right past me OP on I70. I’m 4 miles S of it.

Next time stop in Williamsburg MO and go to Crane’s Country Store. It’s only a 1.4 mile N of I70.

Thanks, OP. Looks like a great hunt. We've been scratching it out in Nebraska, and it's been tough. Maybe even worse than last year. Always good to get the dogs out, espeically the 6 month old GWP, but when you're not consistently getting into birds, it's hard on morale. That said, the birds we did get into were great, and my son shot better than me! We keep toying with a hunt in Kansas but South Dakota and Minnesota are calling.

I think our wild quail population has ceased to exist in Georgia.  When I was younger in the mid 70-s I think I walked up 2 wild coveys.  That was our 1200 acre farm.  I can remember the better times.  At least here in middle Georgia.
