Just sold a spare upper and am looking to assemble something for hunting. Having a hard time with caliber choice though. Will primarily hunt coyotes, but would like to plan a future hog hunt with my own gun (instead of rental). I was leaning towards the 6.5 Grendel but then hear a lot of mixed reviews like this may not be the best choice on coyote. I’ve seen a lot of 22 Nosler and .224 Valkyrie recommendations lately. I don’t reload so ammo cost would be a big influence in this. Any thoughts? Thanks

theres a member on 65grendel that does hogs all the time, and yotes too.

My vote is either 6.8 spc or 6.5 grendel. Both will be effective at ethical killing distances.

6.5 Grendel

Bonus is that the bolt & mags will fit the new Hornady offering of 6mm ARC, which is a standardized factory offering of the various 6mm Grendel et al rounds.

6mm ARC will match a 308 staying transonic past 1000 yards. Only reason I bring that up is, to point out that 6.8 is leading you down a cul de sac.

223 for obvious reasons, 300 BO for quiet, 6.5 G for hunting/long range, 6mm ARC for really long range.

224 Valk & 6.8 SPC II are the past

Is 6.8 commonly available ammo wise?

Also being from Ohio, I’ve made my 350Legend my all around gun. I’ve hunted yotes here for years and and can’t see where I give anything up using my 350. Places where I can get a really long shot requires a different gun altogether. I use a 25-06. For normal calling and jump shooting yotes I prefer more mass like the 350.
I just mentioned this cause it’s easy to build and Cheap to shoot. Reloading is easy and it checks your boxes. You can also use it in Ohio for deer.

My experience only, but for coyote hunting at reasonable range, the .223 is fine.  For larger game, I moved to the 6.8.  No experience with the other calibers.

I think 6.5G or 6.8SPC would be fine. Take your pick.

Under 200 meters I've had good luck with 223/556 against Deer, hogs and coyotes.

62gr Fusion or Fusion MSR really does great for me.

Grendel if you want something with more energy, but 223 is a great round for coyote.

For coyotes and any other varmint, I wouldn't consider anything other than 223.

5.56 or Grendel. Ammo availability for both is pretty much guaranteed.

223 Vmax is bad medicine for coyotes and a gold dot/fusion will do hogs in. If you're just wanting something different I'd honestly say 224 Valkyrie since the american eagle ammo is so cheap and fairly available, but my opinion is that 6mm ARC will probably outdo them all performance wise

Are you in a blind or are you spotting and stalking?
How long are the shots you will be taking?
Will you be getting in and out of the vehicle multiple times during the hunt?

I do a ton of hog/coyote hunting, mostly at night, where we are spotting and stalking.  I really like my 6.5 Grendel.  It's lightweight and even though mine is a 16-inch barrel, it performs well out of 12-inch barrels so you could get a pistol or sbr.  However, I also really like my 556 rifle, 6.8 rifle, 308 rifle and 7.62x39 pistol.

If you have any questions, let me know

Will be spot and stalk. I don’t have a ton of spots to shoot coyotes around here, so shouldn’t be in and out of the truck much. Trying to find a cheaper place to hunt hogs, the guided trip I did was great, but at $500 a night plus air fare and hotel, it gets a little pricey. That won’t be a regular thing, but I would like to save from buying two dedicated guns.

What distances will you be shooting at?

If under 100yrds, just go with a 300blk shorty suppressed. Same mags and bolt as your 5.56s and decent factory 300blk ammo really isn't any more expensive than 6.5 or 6.8.

It really depends on the store you go to as well as the general area.

Mail order is always an option, or maybe ask a local mom + pop FFL to get some in for you to try.

Federal American Eagle has 90 grain Speer TNT bullet loaded at 2900 fps. The TNT is a good varmint bullet and should outright devastate coyotes. A 50 round box shouldn't set you back more than $40 or so.

There are two weights in the Fusion line, 90 and 115 grain, rated at 2900 and 2575 fps. If you wanted to try standardizing on just one round for multipurpose hunting, varmint and small-medium game, see which of those 2 your rifle likes and groups the best and then go kill you some four-legged stuff.

My local PSA carries a lot more 6.8spc than 6.5g.

I'm in the heavily wooded SE, so maybe that is the reason.

.223 has killed a shitload of coyotes, deer, and hogs

If you want a bigger bullet with some legs, 6.5G.

If retro calibres make you happy, get an AR10.

Thanks for all the responses. Ended up with the 6.5 Grendel. Shopped all the local places and Grendel was available, didn’t see 6.8 at all. Seems to be enough options, from wolf for plinking, 95 grain coyotes to 120+ for hogs if I can swing that at some point. Went with an Odin works upper, will post pics when I get it.
