Despite having a preference point I was unsuccessful in my Big Game Combo draw for Montana. Everyone was predicting 100% draw odds but no dice for me. This was going to be my first elk hunt. I’m familiar with Montana and hunted antelope out that way last year. This was going to be my last hurrah before going on deployment in 2020, but my plans were foiled by bad luck.

That leaves Colorado OTC as my only real option... Anyone have any tips? Units to look at? Any help would be appreciated. Looking at 3rd rifle as I have a few schedule conflicts for 2nd rifle.

Lots of decent OTC units, you flying or driving?

I’ll be driving. Fully prepared to hike in a few miles and set up a spike camp for the duration.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife publishes all the hunt stats on their website.
Look at the success rates of the different units and pick a good one.

They publish the Big Game guide too, so you can see which units are available for OTC or leftovers.

Bring tire chains and any vehicle extrication equipment you have.
Anything can happen in November.

Any specific portion of the state you want to hunt? I'll be in southwest Colorado for 2nd season but most likely only hunting mule deer unless I don't draw a tag then will do OTC elk. It would be cutting it close, but I could let you know what I see in the unit I hunt and point you towards animals (if I see any). As stated above, the parks and wildlife website has a ton of info as well as services like GoHunt and a few others.
I've located some elk e-scouting but they are in their summer range.

It’s a blast. New guy in my camp last year arrowed this one.
We humped into some great spots the 5 days before he got this, he was worn down so I told him to hunt near camp, and he got this,  very near camp.

Love the pictures guys! Definitely what I needed after the kick in the nuts finding out I didn’t draw MT. Colorado is still some awesome country with a lot of elk!
