I am headed out to pick up my second truckload of seed potatoes for our store.  I have been told that this will be my last delivery for this year.  I usually get 4 loads.

There are going to be shortages again this year.  The source I buy from in PA has trucks in route from Georgia to pick up potatoes.  They have never had this demand before.

Just a heads up.

There is a shortage, I don't know the reason.  I did notice some of the potatoes were smaller this year than usual.  Particularly the Red Norlands (an early red potato).  Since seed potatoes are sold by weight and not count, a poor growing season resulting in smaller lighter weight potatoes could cause a shortage.  People purchasing out of concern could also be part of it.  Lastly, seed potatoes can be eaten, and they cost less per pound than treated potatoes.  Some people may choose to purchase seed potatoes and deal with the sprouting rather than eating the more common treated potatoes.

On a second note, Nitrogen fertilizer is also going up, with the price increasing almost daily.

There were stories last year of farmers not harvesting and just discing their fields due to transportation issues due to covid. May have finally trickled.

And not to make this political, but policies impact prices.  All the socialist-loving voters who think big corporations getting taxed more is great, stick to the big-corporations!  Or reducing our domestic energy production will save the planet, they are clueless as to the economic impacts they will personally pay at the grocery store or gas pump and likely every consumer product or services.  Big corporations will never pay higher taxes out of their profits; they pass those taxes down to the consumers with increased prices.

That said, I think a lot of people got into gardening last year as seeds and starter plants were bare in all of the local shops where we live due to covid and quarantine.  They may want to keep that hobby going and it's not a demand that was expected again.  Other than than, it's disconcerting and I suspect there are similar shortages for other produce regionally.

I still have about 400 lbs of potatoes in the basement from last years garden.  I’ll plant them like normal.  Usually plant about 100 lbs of seed potatoes a year but might double it this year.  Lots of family and friends asking for my extras, most of the people asking normally don’t plant them.

Canning lids are starting to show up again so go out and get what you can now. I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a wild summer.

Thanks.  Due to the weather I'm getting a late start on the garden, but I'll be picking up everything today.

I bought two bags at tractor supply two weeks ago they where almost out. These are small bags of 7 to 8 potatoes. I'm planting a 4 foot by 8 foot raised bed garden.

Maybe a dumb question, but can you just plant potatoes you buy in the grocerie store?

I have successfully planted store-boughts that had already grown eyes.

Potatoes sold for eating are usually chemically treated to reduce the eyes from forming.  The eyes are the little sprouts that will sometimes start on a potato.  A seed potato is the same potato, it is just not treated.  If you have sprouts starting on a potato, it should grow into a potato plant.

Huh.  I just bought five lb of red potatoes on sale from my grocery store, and two days later each one was sprouting.  I just cleaned them up and ate them but maybe I should go get more and put them in the ground.

How long can I keep potato seeds in my garage? It's still pretty early to plant being as far north as I am. I saw some the other day for sale the other day, but didn't buy them because we might be a month out from planting yet.

I have a couple hundred pounds of kennebec from last year's crop. will be planting what I need then giving away the rest.

Seed supply is sketchy this year, glad I bought early. Johnny's shut down sales to non commercial customers, not sure if they opened back up to individuals or not.

Johnny's opened to non commercial sales a few weeks ago.

What's the best way to store the store bought in the basement?  In their original bags or some other manner?

we store ours on pallets in our cold cellar.

Yeah as long as they sprout indoors they'll be ok.  You can't really tell when you buy them in a grocery store.

We always cut the larger seed potatoes in half and planted them to make them go further too.

They can be cut smaller than 1/2, as long as there is an eye and a quarter of the potato (more or less) there should be enough to start a plant.

Save the beds for other things and no-dig grow the taters in hay or straw?

I'm always interested in extending my limited space.  The hay/straw idea is an interesting one, but I wonder about rodents getting in?  (Or snakes in some environments?)

I've gone through some evolution in my potato approach, and currently am using 16-gallon grow bags with shade provided on the southern side of the bags on that end of the cluster [of bags].
