I've been looking into catalytic propane heat.

Looking at a review of the Camco 57351 8K BTU, one user had a failure.
He spoke to a Camco tech who said the propane in the Western states is contaminated (intentionally) with a lubricant that eventually ruins the catalyst in the Wave catalytic heaters.

Is there a way to filter LPG to remove such a "contaminant"?
If so, what would be the proper way to filter it?

Partially correct and partially false. Propane does not contain any lubricants. The oil comes from rubber propane high pressure lines. They leach oil out and into the line which then gets onto the heater and ruins it.

There are high pressure propane lines that don’t leach oil out.

If the connection to the heater allows a 1lb bottle, there is a filter you can buy that filters out any oil/contaminated.  It doesn’t appear that heater can run off a 1lb bottle so just make sure the rubber lines are leach proof. Originally the lines that didn’t leach oil were green (Mr Heater brand) but I have some that are black.

Another thing about all ventfree heaters.....never use scented aerosols around them or even near them when they are running. The scent will burn onto the heater and stink for a long time.
