Looks like there are 1-2 bucks on my land with this big lump right in the middle of the chest.  Any experience with this before?  Is the meat safe to eat if I shoot him?

Could be an benign tumor such as a lipoma or fibroma, abscess, goiter, or a hydrocyst.

If you really want to know what it is, you'll have to cut it out, just like a surgeon would.
Then slice it up and look at it under a microscope like a pathologist would.

Ask the local game warden if there is something affecting the deer population.

Capture it and bring it to Dr. Pimple Popper for analysis?

Probably a fibroma but could also be an abscess from a injury.

If a fibroma it’s not a problem.   An abscess and you might have some ugly stink and puss.  If it is encapsulated it may not be an issue either.

If it's a cyst, just cut it away and you'll be fine. Cattle have cysts as well that are just trimmed away without wasting the entire carcass.

I killed one years ago with something similar. Being curious I cut into it and found a broken piece of an aluminum arrow shaft. It was basically encased in scar tissue.

My friend killed one with a big lump on its neck that contained a TC Maxi-ball.

Had a young buck one year that had a punching bag size thing hanging off his rack while in velvet.  Got injured somehow and the bag was full of blood.  Saw him on camera a few days later and it had burst and drained and he was covered in blood.  Antler was a little funky on that side but he was otherwise just fine.

I’ve seen them get injured from fighting and get covered in big abscesses.

Shot one about 20 years ago that had mixed it up with a porcupine. (Or started to bed down on one)
Had a few abscesses with quills and quill fragments in them, mostly on the neck and a lower front leg.
Easy enough to cut around. Probably only lost 3-4 lbs of meat at most.
